I know some people carry spare oil and many of those also carry an oil filter just incase.

Not sure what others do, but I seal my filter in a vacuum bag to help keep it dust free. I also carry the filter with the o-ring up in the box it comes in, just to help protect the seal.

Since a new oil filter for our vehicles only weight ounces and takes up very little room they are very easy to carry.

More important in my opinion, especially for expedition travel where fuel quality can be sketchy, is a fuel filter. I carry a couple just in case. If you have an oddball filter then I'd carry a couple for expedition travel. My filter size is common but I'm particular on brands so I carry a couple of oil filters too.

Steve,

I carry mine inside the original box. I rotate it with a new one during a oil change. The plastic bag is a good idea.

I also have a fuel filter, have never replaced it in a trip. Nor the oil filter.

I don't carry a spare air filter since it is bulky for the Land Cruiser. I wish it was like the Tacoma / 4Runners; flat.

More important ....is a fuel filter.

In my backcountry travels I have seen an oil filter fail, and one time a guy had an issue with a fuel filter, but it just need to be re-tightened because of resent maintenance.

I can certainly see the importance of a fuel filter when the quality of fuel is questionable. Anyone have thoughts about the intake screen in the tank?

I can see where a spare fuel filter needs to be added to my gear. For my Taco I also need to add to my tool bag, so I can field change a filter. Since I’ve never seen a maintenance interval from Toyota fuel filter, anyone have that spec? I was planning on a 100k mile change??? Since the Tacoma filter is about $35 (right?) and I’m almost 100k maybe I’ll change it and carry the old one???

Do you guys seal your oil or fuel filter against dust? Maybe the fuel filter comes sealed? But the oil filter is highly likely to collect dust, and if that filter needs to be field swapped it’s going to inject those dust particles right into the bearing surface.

Thanks for the input guys. :beertoast:

I've never seen a schedule for my '02 Taco fuel filter either. The Subaru says to replace it every 30k!! So for the Taco, I just replaced it for the first time at 90k.

Has anyone ever actually known of an oil filter failure? I once had a fuel filter start leaking but never have known of a oil filter failure. I suppose if it sat real low on the engine block and was subject to a possible damage it might make sense.
