I started a Dutch Oven page on my site. Since you guys are probably more adept at it than I am, I announce this with some trepidation.

:D

Give me some ideas as to what type of gear you'd like to see on my site. I have so much of it, I forget what's unique and what's just kind of run-of-the-mill.

Maybe the DO's are.

Anyway, here's the LINK.

EXCELLENT write-up! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

Man, that makes me hungry. I still do not have a dutch oven. I have always wanted to make the time for one, but have never seemed to make it happen. I didn't know the proper way to season them - I just thought you cooked food in it to do that. Thanks for sharing - great info.

I also enjoyed reading about your Kelly Kettle (http://tawayama.com/gear/cookinggear/kellykettle/kellykettle.html). How do you like it? I use a regular tea kettle on a backpack stove - other than the benefit of the kelly in bad wind, is there any advantage? Seems like it might be nicebecause you cansave fuel and just burn whatever stuff might be laying around.

Thanks BajaTaco.

It's not quite done yet, I still need to take some pics of the oven covers, and next time we cook with one I ought to take a picture of how it turned out.

I think about that every time we use it, but the food is so good and when it's time to eat, nothing stops us, so I haven't had the chance to shoot the finished product.

The Kelly Kettle page also isn't done. I shot a bunch of pics using it with the scouts, but haven't posted them yet. Thanks for the reminder.

I do like it, but there are a few tricks. Don't use wet fuel. It had rained where we were about a week before, and even though the twigs were 'dry', they weren't. It took a bit of newspaper and some coaxing to get it started.

Also, 2 pints is not that much water. I have an old blue ceramic teapot that would hold double the water, and I think if I'm going to be heating up water for a group, I'll use it. If it's just me and I'm feeling somewhat nostalgic, want to show off how to build a small fire (with DRY tinder), etc., the Kelly Kettle will be nice to have.

I can also use it on a burner too, if I was feeling lazy or didn't want to wait for the fire to heat up the water.

I think that for a small group, 3-4 people, the Kelly Kettle is great. Any larger groups and you'd better have at least one more kettle, or a conventional 'cowboy' teapot.

I think I'll use this text on my website now that I've written it up.

I'll point Srisuda to this thread when she comes back. I knowshe will like this oven and I wouldn't be surprised ifwe'll have one on one of the next trips http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif
I sounds like something to make use of the coals in a fire, only problem there is that we usually get to camp hungry and don't have the time to prepare a nice bed of coals...

Well, then you can always use those left over coals to make a nice dessert. I have a recipie for peach cobbler that is idiot proof.

No really, I used to make it one way that was very simple, now I have a new recipie that even my 5yo daughter can do.

:)

What other gear do you guys want to see featured on the site?

Onemore question on the kelly - SOOT? Do you have a black sooty surface that gets the inside of the carrying bag, or your hands, black? I see your point about 2 pints not being too much. That's one thing I like about using the backpack stove with the "Revereware" tea kettle. I can quickly boil enough water for two large coffees (or tea, whatever) and enough water to add to hot food (like instant oatmeal for example) and have a little left over to have nice hot water to wash the face or hands.

Uwe brings up a good point about the coals - sometimes it's tough to be patient when the belly is yelling http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif

As far as what else to see on the site... do you have anything for shade? I really want to do some kind of shade system. I already built one, and I might work on it a little more, but it seems like it's just not doing the trick. I want something fast and easy - and sturdy. I would love to get one of the retractable units and just mount it to the side of the roof rack. MrS got a nifty little coiling shade that he is going to bring to the party so I can check it out. Transalper has a neat setup (http://www.geocities.com/transalper/images/4runner/tarppic.jpg) but I don't know too much about it.

I have a Dutch Oven cookbook, but have yet to try any of the recipes in it. I love cooking with cast iron. When I camp, the only thing I ever seem to cook in my Dutch Ovens thoughis chili for burritos. I usually fry up a bunch of elk meat, onions, green chilis, jalapenos, and garlic, then add ranch style beans and they it simmer for an hour or so. Then just spoon it into the tortillas and you better hope you don't camp next to me!http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif

Tawąyama, I like that dessert idea. It would be perfect timing, we usually get a little hungry by the time the coals are perfect.</div>
As for other gear to be featured... Don't know right now, but anything that's unusual or little tricks are always good. As for kitchen setups you can see what some of us use in that Backcountry kitchen Thread. </div>

Yeah, I was looking at that thread. I really like seeing what other people finds works and doesn't work in the kitchen. I appreciated everyone participating in that thread, I got some ideas from there. I DEFINITELY want to try some of that Elk chili!!!

Shade? Yeah, shade is always a concern in the desert. I have thought of a few things to try, but haven't rigged up or bought anything yet.

The rear door of my utility box when it flips up gives a little shade, but not enough.

You've got me thinking about that now. Dang it! There's always something isn't there.

No, there's no soot anywhere on the outside for you to touch. All of the smoke is carried up the inner chamber of the kettle, and the base where you build your fire can be stored with the black side in.

You don't have to touch anything dirty, which is another thing I like about it.

A teapot you end up having to wipe off if you don't want your other stuff getting yucky.

Here's another piece of cast-iron cookware I have. it's a fry-pan with ribs cast into the bottom. Keeps your food from drowning in it's own fat.

And since they looked so good, I thought I'd shoot it.

We used the fire to cook dinner on the 2nd night (at Rubicon Springs), then used the coals for the apple cobbler in the dutch oven. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/burger.gif It was a great topper to the days 8 hours of 'wheeling, and provided some much needed relax time, and sparkedsome great conversation.

I have two dutch ovens. </div>

I bought the first one (12 quart) because I thought that all the other ones looked too small.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/chairfall.gif </div>
The first time I cooked with it, just my wife and I, there was so much food we did not know what to do. That first recipe, which I can't find right now, was really good. It was called sparkling potatoes. I believe http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif that I browned some bacon on the bottom them the rest gets fuzzy, I know there was potatoes, cream of mushroom soup, and Sprite. Oh well. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smashfreakb.gif </div>
I have done the peach cobbler with that too. The trick I used was to line it with foil, that way you don't have to worry about the bread sticking and being too hard to clean out. </div>
I did learn though that the 12 quart is too big for just us two. Which is why I haven't used it for some time. It is nicely seasoned though. So I also have a 8 or 6 quart now. I haven't seasoned that one yet. </div>

I will look for that recipe and post it if/when I find it</div>

Baja and Goodtimes... remind me next time we get together for some wheeling and camping. I'll bring my dutch oven and we can do the cobbler thing. I think that's all I've ever made in it! I know my dad (who had it before I did) used to make some other stuff in it to. Not exactly sure what though. I guess I'll have to check on that.

Heading to Alamo, Nevada this weekend to do some cattle branding and camping with my family. It'll be the first time in a LONG time we've all been out together. Should be fun.

I'm heading to Moab, not once, but twice during May. Will spend nearly half the month there. Hopefully I won't get sick of it.

Hehe!

There are probably lots of stores in San Diego that sell them. Here is an on-line source

GSI Outdoors (http://www.gsioutdoors.com/products/campfire/dutchovens.html) for lighter weight units (may not be suitable for purists http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) I don't know - haven't tried them. But I like the idea of less weight for vehicles that are already struggling with load management.

-JACKPopular should have them http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/guitar.gif But then, they are on in AZ.

I've seen them in camping store, maybe even a Walmart might have it.

We mayl experiment with one from a yard sale this weekend. Got to search for some great desert recepies.
