We sometimes post links to sites with interesting travel journals, maybe it's time to put them in one place. Here is anew (?) one, they have links to more. I haven't looked at it yet, came up because these guys visited a confluence:

www.nextmillionmiles.com (http://www.nextmillionmiles.com)Awesome find Vince.

From the site:

"We decided, on the way south, to avoid El Salvador, as all the guide books and most of the travelers we had met cautioned about traveling in El Salvador because of the possibility of violence and the possibility of being robbed on any road. Especially the roads around Santa Ana and Cerro Verde volcanoes. </div>
During our travels in Central America we had met a number of people from El Salvador and they encouraged us to visit their country explaining that the violence and robberies were a thing of the past. We decided on the way back north to throw caution to the wind and venture into El Salvador. This was one of our better decisions. We found the country to be beautiful and the people the friendliest in Central America."</div>
My kind of people! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif </div>
This is a great site. That rig sure does look comfy. Imagine an RO water system and solar - must be nice! Man, you could stay out there for a looong time. They seem to be really attached to their dog, even adjusting/reworking their entire itinerary around the pooch - that's cool http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif </div>

Yeah, you certainly could stay out for loooong time in that kind of rig...certainly appeals to me. Apparently Xplorer motor homes (there is no 'E' at the beginning) in Michigan is very accomodating in building any custom configuration you can come up with...so that's nice to know for the future...they were certainly adventuresome...great spirit.

He mentioned the Tiger CX motorhome (made by Provan)...also built on a truck chassis with 4x4 option. It's a smaller rig...19 feet long...if they'd be willing to do basic mods - lifted suspension and locking diffs - I would think you could take the smaller rig into places they couldn't go...and these are alot less bucks than Xplorer.

I see the Turtleexpedition folk went to custom made hardshell rig in their Turtle V...looks like a great rig...they said they would consider manufacturing a limited number if it proved out...do you know if they have? I couldn't determine that.

The Vehicle-Dependent Expedition Guide thread led to the inevitible web search which turned up some more sites (with their own expanding set of links) to spend some time on.

If you can read it (looks like German), they have some roof-top tents, etc.
http://www.dachzelte-und-mehr.de/index.html

Some incredible expedition vehicles http://www.actionmobil.at/eng/home/index.html

A site in English and German...

http://www.globedrivers.com

This is how they introduce the site.
We are an open community of travelminded people, meet a couple of times a year, shop-talk about the best suited vehicles and the most adventurous itenerary. The rest of the year we are mostly on the move. At least with our fingers on the map. Of course, we would like to share our experience with vehicles, with preparation and realization of long-term journeys, with technics and equipment with you.</div>
http://www.overland.co.za

Complete with pictures of wrecks, abandoned vehicles and graders at the bottom of the links selections on the left of the page! Also the kitting out section.

Hope these aren't duplicates. I scanned the existing links and didn't see any.

Very nice site.

Look at this ...
"
Adventure Architects joined Jeepers Jamboree in 1999 for a six-week off-road expedition across South America. From Lima Peru, the group traversed the Andes to Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, skirted the blue waters of Lake Titicaca, crossed the highlands of Bolivia, and south to Argentina's Iguazu Falls. Incredible scenery, remote villages, breakdowns, extortionists and traveling in our own Jeeps, shipped down from the US, added to the Adventure.
"

We need to get something like this going here.
I am still trying to make my South America trip happen, but now in 2005.

Doron, did you find the Trip descriptions and logs? I could not find them.

Yes,

I heard and did some research recently about Tablet PC.

- 1st generation was called out from stores. Too many returns. Many stores like Fry's are not selling them anymore.
- 2nd generation, like Fujitsu got better reports. I have some vendors that "guarantee" that they are robust.
- I saw a couple people the other day on the street with some rugged units. Could not get the brand. But they seems to be in use for awhile.

I will do some work soon on these since we are looking for Electronic Notebooks at work. This is a 5 months projects.

I hope I understood your question and did not waste Forum space with the wrong answer.

I held this one http://www.walkabout-comp.com/products_specs_xrt.html in my hand. Felt very rugged. They are doing some testing on them at work and shipping them to Iraq as we speak. Un-scratchable screen (using a knife) the more ambient light the brighter the screen. Mill spec 810-F. I don't know about the performance though. I hope they are OK. For the guys in Iraq sake, if nothing else.

http://www.joko-goes-to-india.ch/index.php

He travelled from Switzerland to India via: Italy, Slovenia, Kroatia, Bosnia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan. Sounds like quite a trip, I've only read a little so far.

I came across this one when I was preparing some confluence visits for a guy who drove from Germany to India by car, then flow to China and did some confluence visits by bicycle.

I have a hard time reading stuff like this, one day I might snap, leave it all behind and just go ...

I have now given up TV just so I can read each of the sites listed above. My wife is concerned for my health....she thinks I may do something crazy like take off on one of the described trips. This is more fun than I've had in a long time. Reading about real people and real experiences reminds you just what the human race is capable of. (And the pictures, there are so many place's I'm finding I would like to wake up in)

Thanks for all the sites and thoughts.

Boy Scout, I would seriously consider keeping an eye on the Wilderness Explorer (http://www.wilderness-explorer.net/)expeditions, if you haven't checked them out yet. Looks like agreat way to go on a world-class expedition with like-minded people, and have all of the logistics already organized for you. You may have already read about this years event in South America (http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/default.aspx?f=9&amp;m=16577)

I sincerely hope we can manage to do these kind of trips / explorations on our life span.

I wanted to bring something to discussion for a while already.
It seems that people can buy more things in the US but do less.
What do you think? Not a political discussion...

The question is then:

Why can we do less in the US if we make more money?

That's easy..we want MORE MORE MORE (generally speaking) I'm trying to get wifey into a more 'relaxed' kinda thinking...every time I think we can escape for a couple days...work gets in the way, her's more than mine. probably cuz I LOVE playing hooky, calling in 'well'...or whatever you want to call it. As mundane as it probably sounds with today's road improvements up there, I still have the AL-CAN highway on my 'life list'. XXXpedition is certainly fueling THAT particular fire.

Working schedule is partially that. As you know in Europe and South America people will be happy when you talk about your 4 weeks vacation. Here, people think you are a slacker.

The American style big screen TV(s), surround system(s), the larger house, student loans, and the MONSTER mortgage + if one have kids, volleyball, soccer, orthodontist,
Cable TV, $60 Internet cable, and on and on.
Driving SUVs to go to work. Huh, me too ...

IMO in Europe people enjoy life better. Different values maybe?

Uwe, what do you say? Boy, really off topic by now.

Not what you might think of as your usual expedition, but a magnificent expedition none the less.

Adventures of Ms. Tioga and George

http://vagabonders-supreme.net/

I don't know if anyone has posted this blog yet, so I will.
George writes about his adventures everyday and hits on his site brings him a little income from advertisers. He has been in Baja for months now and reading through his journal will get you some great insights and info on the peninsula and its people.
A little description of George from his site.

George:
He is the only human aboard the Team and his main job is to drive Ms. Tioga.

George met Ms. Tioga on February 25, 2003. On that day, the cancer doctor declared George to be in remission. George went out from the doctor's office and put down the $cash$ money and brought Ms. Tioga home. George never slept anywhere but inside Ms. Tioga from that day on! A member of George's cancer support group asked George if he would keep a journal of his travels.
That is how this Blog was born.

Early in George's travels, he began to speak with Ms. Tioga. Soon, other members of the Team joined in and that is how the Team was born. But it was not until George began to camp in the wild places of the west that it became clear that this was a very special team. We were Vagabonds, roaming everywhere in search of adventure. The Team feared nothing, and proved it time and time again as they were carried by Ms. Tioga to places that no other RV had ever tread.
