We're back from a great trip. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

It looks like must of the excitement happened after we hit pavement on the third day. Scott, it looks like the child threw a good tantrum but happy to hear that things worked out.A very capable crew you had with you.

I'm including a picture of my crown jewel from the trip. A tinaja with lots of water. More to follow.

Man, what a cool trip http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

Thanks to everyone for another great adventure. I really didn't want to come home.

Until I get my gallery up, here are a few hand-picked shots...

Just a note to tell you all what a great time Amy and I had on this trip. Everyone of you were a pleasure to meet and travel with, and we look forward to the next opportunity. Onlydisappointment for thewhole trip was that Scott chose to wait until we had leftto perform the trailer trick. Oh well, maybe next time.</div>

I've done some reference on thecraters.

My source is Camp-Fires on Desert and Lava, William T. Hornaday, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908. All measurements take by Godfrey Sykes.

Sykes Crater

Circumference: three miles
Depth:750 feet

McDougal Crater

Circumference: two miles
Depth: 400 feet

Crater Molina:(Trebol)

Named by the McDougal party for Senor Olecario Molina, Secretary of the Department of Fomento.

I second the osprey pic. There are a couple that hang out down here by my work, and just sit on the boat masts and eat fish all day. Which, I must say is a really cool sight to see!</div>
Glad everyone is back and safe</div>

Bob, interesting on the craters! I guess one has to compare them in a day not visit them 6 weeks apart. I could have sworn that McDougal has a bigger circumference. It looked deeper to us. Jack, this also means that you haven't seen the biggest crater yet http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/joker1.gif

Blupaddler, any pics of those birds carrying/catching fish?

Baja, great preview pics, can't wait to see the whole gallery. Srisuda says it'll be tough finding any of hers worth posting after seeing just a glimpse of what you got.

Let go on parts:

1) Scott, sorry to hear about the trailer. Glad it did not take a serious hit. I saw the pictures. I had a hard time identifying the damage.

2) Great trip. Great people. Just call me again next time. Any time

3) Very nice pictures. I am debating printing some that may start some family discussion.

Time to continue to explore the pictures.

Scott, nice photos!! You two got some really great shots!! Oh man, our memories will be well preserved.

BP, the Westy belongs to my good friend Wes. I believe it isa 1990. He really loves it - when he set up camp on the beach, it was definitely a sight to see. The vehicle made the trip all the way to our turn-off near Puerto Penasco (including about 35 miles of beach driving I think). At this point, Wes decided to continue on to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point)and depart from the group. He had some intuition that the route ahead would not be so wise for the VW and he was probably correct. There were alot of rocky, steep gullies to traverse, and it would have been a challenge with the break-over angle and departure angle on the Syncro without sliders and some beefy skid plates. Definitely an awesome rig though - camping in style.

I am going to develop my 3 rolls of 35mm prints and scan them this weekend. We take most of our landscape and artistic shots with that camera so that they can be developed in our darkroom/enlarged, etc. I will post these this weekend.

I really enjoyed looking at all the pictures fromScott and Baja. Very good. The photos of the craterslook very cool. I really missed out. I wish I could have gone. I am not going to commit to any other trips from now on until I check the 4wdtrips board to see what is being planned. What is the story about the "Flying Jack?"

One of my favorite photos of Baja and the Sierra Pinacate has always been the home page of the Arizona Region Image Archive (ARIA). (http://aria.arizona.edu/)(This is your source for maps in Arizona.)

Now I've made my own favorite photo thanks to photos provided by NASA. It's attached. Compare it to the ARIA (http://aria.arizona.edu/) site. It is a compilation of my trips on different roads through the area over the years. It's a very big file at 700kb even though it at has been compressed 90%. Download with dialup only if if you have nothing to do with you phone line for a while.

The blue lines to left are trips through El Camino Del Diabloas you can travel it in the United States. The Arizona-Sonora Border is in Orange. Everything in redare trips in Sonora, Mexico.

In case you need more feedback..... I also like the new look better.

About the jump videos. There is only action for about 10sec and then it sits there and plays for 10+ more seconds, that on purpose? Or is it something with my player?

I've been doing some post trip research. I thought that I'd share a few items thatmay be of interest to those on the trip.

The big salt flat has a name. Lumholtz (1912, 261)saysit is sometimes calledSalina Grande. He reports that a mining surveyor calculated that it contained seven million tons of salt. Lumholtz found numerous springs in the area and that will be something for us to explore on the next trip. Other salt flats in the area were sources of salt to natives that inhabited the Pinacate region and Southern Arizona. Salt from this area was carried to Tucson for barter. His description of the treks to obtain the salt are fascinating reading.

The mud cliffs between El Golfo and Salina Grande appear to be deposits from the ancient Colorado River and are fossil rich. The mouth of the Colorado river may have been where Salina Grande is now. You can read the original reference here (http://www.paleomon2.com/quaternary.html).
