I have some time off coming up...My questions for all of you and your infinite wisdom.

Have any of you done the white rim trail? How long does it take? Do I need any special permits? Any other special precautions?
Where do I find out more information about it?

Thanks in advance
robb

I have never been on the trail, but I know a few who have (some of them are running around here I think). I hear it can be done in one day, but you don't want to do that. Take two so you can enjoy it. You need permits for camping....maybe to go on the trail at all, but I am sure you need permits to stay overnight. Group size is limited, not sure the actual size, but it is small. I know there is info somewhere........

This should get you started with plenty of "strait from the horses mouth" information.</div>

We went in summer '95. At the time you needed a permit, the number was very limited, but not too many crazy people to do it in summer. Camping was allowed only in their camp sites. We spent 2 nights on the trail.

White Rim is on my 'To Do' list, but I haven't done it yet. I just went through the reservation process for our trip just across the river from the White Rim Trail (the Maze District), so it's fresh in my memory. We were gonna do the WR trail this spring, but decided to just focus on the Maze. Who knows, maybe we'll get tired of relaxing and decide to get around to it this year??

You can get permits at the station, but they only give out so many and the White Rim Trial is very popular (especially in the spring and fall). They recommend making a reservation, especially if you want to camp. You gotta fax or mail them a completed form.

The rangers are very helpful, but are only reachable by phone in the morning. They don't answer the phones in the afternoon. I wish I could do that . . .

Peggy andI did the White Rim Road in July of 2001 and where back again last year during the Ship Rock trip. I've still got to write that part of the trip.

Last year was during spring break and we didn't have reservations and all the camps were full and no permits were being issued. Permits are only required for overnight trips. We only went as far as Musselman Arch which is an easy reach for a day trip and got out of the madness that is the Easter Jeep Safari.

July of 2001 we made reservations and we were the only ones that did.We had the whole road to ourselves. I thought the weather was fine but then I went to Yuma for last Fourth of Julyhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ieh.gif . It's a great road and an easy two day trip with lot's of exploring. We stayed at the White Crack Campground. It's the most popular because it's about half way and it's off the main road.

The links that others have provided should get you most of the official information. The reservation process was painless as long as you know when you will be on the trail. If you want to be spontanious, think July.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif
