Cool. Lets keep talking. Tell us when and what. We will try to be there.

I was just checking the Forum Calendar. It seems still way empty.

Isn't this the perfect time for Arizona trips? Why the Az folks are so quiet? Talk to us people. Propose some cool trips. If not for us, for Uwe. He needs to use all the $$ that he is putting on the 4Runner.

During Summer we will take you to some of our mountains and lakes.

p.s. Sorry Steve, I did not want to high-jack your Thread.

I will probably want to go too. Regarding quiet AZ people, I was going to plan a trip for Prez. day weekend, but Bob beat me to it. I am not making too many other plans until Sharon and I figure out when we are going to do our snorkel/beach trip. After that is decided, I will be ready to plan some stuff. Hopefully soon...

Chris, we need to start thinking about a river trip (canoe and 'yak).

Steve, does this mean that Rafael Swell is out?

Baja and Goodtimes, if you plan any river trips, let me know!

GT, basically, you need to get there the evening before you actuallyget into the river. Then 3 days and 2 nights are spent on the river. The last day on the river, will also be the same day you drive home. And you will get home LATE. So 3 1/2 days minimum.

Huh, so if we all managed to come up with, say, a 5 day stretch, we could swing it, and still work in some exploring time? Or does the 3/2 include time to wander around in the canyons and check things out?

Just because Steve can't go doesn't mean we all have to stay right? http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif </div>
Let's look for a long weekend alternative. This Baja/Goodtimes are youthinking aboutthis river trip for that weekend od is it crowed then? Sounds great and the pictures are a real invitation. What if one does not have a 'boat', but still is interested?</div>

Feb. is a great month to do paddle trips on the Colorado, because the days are generally gorgeous and cool but sunny, the nights can be freezing. This is a good time because the general boating/jetski crowd has not yet arrived, and if doing the BC section, the hot springs feel really good. I haven't done it, but I imagine that early march might be good too. I think that late May would be too hot and crowded. Uwe, you can rent canoes/kayaks from downriver outfitters (http://www.downriveroutfitters.com/) (the same people that do the shuttle service).

GT, the 3 day/2 night includes time to explore the canyons and soak in the springs. We actually enjoyed Boy Scout canyon so much that we stayed there 2 nights (spent a whole day in the canyon hiking/soaking) and then had a long paddle to get out on the 3rd day (we barely made it in time for the shuttle!). An extra day/night would be awesome though. If you had 4 or 5 days, you could try actually putting in at Willow beach, and paddling against the current, upstream, to avoid the cost and constraints of the shuttle service, but I'll bet this would be a major workout in my canoe.Probably less in a sleek kayak.

If I do the trip, depending on if Sharon goes, I may have a seat available in the canoe for someone.

I won't be able to do the trip in the spring. I will end up taking some vacation in April for the Aravaipa Canyon backpack trip, and that will kill what little I have.</div>

This fall I will have some more saved up, and could realistically get a week off with the way my schedule works (either a Monday - Sunday, or a Friday - Thursday). But then that may interfere with other peoples vacation and Moab....http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif </div>

Hey GT, you will love Aravaipa, it is one my most favorite places in AZ. You heard about me, Brian, Stev, and Katz seeing a band of coatis when we were there in November didn't you? It was so cool, made my whole trip. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

You getting the permit and hiking through the whole thing from top to bottom? It is well worth it from what I've heard. Not done the full hike yet myself.

I tried to get permits for a 3 day trip. But they were booked! I managed to get 2, 2-day permits, so we will not hike the whole thing. We are entering the East end (the west didn't have any open slots for the days I wanted), so we will probably stay in the upper 1/2. I want to go up Turkey Creek and check out the cliff dwellings, and hell hole looks pretty impressive (on the topo anyway), and of course there are the springs up in boogerman canyon. Anyone know if those are hot? That would be cool.......

Yea, kinda late to plan the Co. river for a trip this season. Maybe in the fall or next year. I have done Aravaipa many times including a through-hike. It is a very special place. Be sure to take really goodcare of it when youvisit.I will PM you.

FYI, that canyon was home to aband of Apaches by the same name. A U.S. military outpost by the name of Camp Grant was established on the northern bank just east of the confluence with the San Pedro river. (and just on the east side of hwy 77 now). Eskiminzin was the leader of the Aravaipa band at the time. I could go on... but you are probably getting bored by now http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Baja and Uwe, lets put something on the Calendar for next year then.
For family I will need a larger floating rig. I am sure we can rent something. I heard of people that spent a couple days navigating in the river.
We will need ride back to the starting point, or ride to start off. The rental guys should be able to take care of us.

Jack, I wouldn't suggest the Black Canyon section of the river for small kids (like Eric) because of the hikes into the side canyons. They require climbing up cracks and boulders where you have to hold onto ropes, do some wedging, or climbing ladders. Another thing you will need to consider is being able to secure Eric and swim with him if necessary. It is my understanding that the Colorado river below Hoover dam is generally quite placid (gentle) but the currents and water level are almost entirely dictated by whoever is controlling the flow from the dam. The water levels can rise and fall very rapidly. It's just something to consider anyway. There is a run further downstream that starts below Blythe, and goes through the Imperial NWR that is more floating and less hiking, with just some short walks around/near the shores. That trip would probably be better for taking Eric along.

Eric will probably float well with the vest.
I was thinking more on the river trip than hiking.
