Jack made a reference to this in his recent South America post. I know it's easier to have the pics in the posts than to follow a link. I also know that dial-up is sloooooow.
So maybe it's time to do a poll on this. Never done a poll, so let's see if this works.

Yes, I like pictures in the posts. Sometimes I won't follow the link to the pictures.
Dial up is indeed slow. Everyone should upgrade to cable.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/joker1.gif
What we have done on some other sites I frequent, is to limit the size of the pictures to 50K or less, and limit the number of pictures in any post (maximum of say, 8 images, including emoticons). This helps speed things up for people living in the stone age...uh, I mean people still using dial up. People who are on dial up at work cannot complain, they are getting paid to wait for the pictures to load.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif

I can probably improve things a bit on my end. My pictures are usually around 300k. I have a dedicated T1, so I forget about how things slow down for the dial-up folks.

Hello,
I would say that the ideal size is 35K bytes. You can get by 50K. A 640 x 480 JPEG image with medium compression will do.
Larger images can be left with a link so people can print them if one wishes to.
Some of the image manipulation software shows how long take to download the picture on different modem speeds.
Thanks,
-JACK

I against big pictures in topics.
I like the little pic that grows when clicked on, or a link.

Well, I didn't vote because I think if you want to inserta pic that is 50K or less in the post, that should be ok, but in consideration of our poor friend Steve who is stuck with dial-up for reasons (sort of) beyond his control, I think the link is the best thing to do. If there is anyone who does not understand how to link a picture, just say so and we can explain it.

Guess I should put in my two cents. I like being able to include pictures in posts. When links are provided I rarely follow them.

</div>Steve, you are looking at this the wrong way. See, if you figure out how much $$$ you get paid per minute, then add up all the minutes you wait to see the pictures, then you will see that you are actually getting paid MORE to WAIT for the pictures to download. So you actually MAKE MONEY by having many large pictures in threads.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/idea.gif

Thinks work for me either way. I have really gotten used to right click a link and open pictures/sites in a new window. I guess the forum even opens the links in a new window when clicked otherwise.
So I 'vote' for limiting the pictures in posts and to make them small. One day we may be back in South America in a remote little village eager to check out the forum in this little internet cafe, but all they have is dial-up.....
