I'm thinking El Golfo/Sierra Pinacate.
It's a place that I haven't been to for a a long time. I just have this itch to get back.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
There are a least two roads that head north from near the osprey nest and I'd like to follow those two roads as far as they go. Anyone that's been on the road from El Golfo to Puerto Penasco has taken a picture of the nest.
I'd like to travel the Sick Springs road SouthEast to NorthWest. I don't think you've traveled a road until you have seen it in both directions. So it's something I'll have to do soon, if not this trip. I really like this road. It's my second favorite.
There were branch roads from the Sick Springs road that need to be explored.
Or we could make an assault on 32114.
And then there are more roads in the Sierra El Rosario. We could probably spend the weekend there.
Can't do it all. but I need to do somethinghttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/supercool.gif

Let's do it. I'm not sure if 2/16 works for me, but 2/14 & 15 do.
I've been down that road more than anybody, & have yet to take a picture of the Osprey nest.
The Sick Springs Rd. needs to be fully explored. Bob, whats your favorite Rd. if this is #2?
Heading into the dunes from the south from El Golfo has my interest, since we were heading straight to 32114.

I talked to Baja tonight about this. Still not sure what is going on. The problem I [may] have is that I will have to switch my sleep schedule around since I get off friday morning at 7:00am, will need some sleep, and need to get some sleep on monday before work monday night. So, lots of driving on Friday or Monday are not going to be good for me. That really only leaves 2 days.......

Wow, that was a pretty good response. Looks like the publicist for this trip has done a good jobhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/yeah.gif . I guess it's a trip.
I've edit some of the postings above to give the road around the Pinacate a name. My research hasn't foundthe realname for it yet so I'm going to call it Sick Springs Road. A story goes with it.
Trip is still in the planning stages. Past history has found us spending Friday night at a motel inYuma ($30). So everybody traveling long distance on Friday should have an easy drive or be able to get some rest. I'll be working all day on Friday and I'm three hours from Yuma. The best exit for people from Arizona and New Mexico will probably be Lukeville on Monday. That's three hours from Tucson.
Sorry,Al. I forgot you only take serious pictures these days. You should probably add the osprey nest this trip. My favorite road is in the Sierra Madre. I believe it generally follows General Crook's route of 1883 to find the Apaches, but I'm still working on that theory.Like the Sick Springs road, it's not well traveled these days and it often disappears.

Oh, brave man. You got rid of the CB? Or spoil ...
CB is like a good memory of old time. Just by someone being able to listen to you, it was a challenge.
Have you tried used a CB after you got used to the VHF? he he he. You will see what I mean.
How could I live without VHF 2m before? Why all the people don't get one...

Here is the plan:
We'll leave Yuma on Saturday morning , February 14th, and head to El Golfo. A leisurely drive down the beach for about thirty five miles puts us in position to cross the salt ponds and head north to the railroad tracks. We'll follow the tracks to check out a couple of roads that head north to the Sierra Pinacate and make sure Al gets his picture of the osprey nest. Camp will probably be somewhere in thisarea north of Bajia Adair.
If none of the roads go where we want, the worst that happens is we go towards Rocky Point and take the Sick Springs road in to the Northwest. Investigating this area should take up the second day.
That will leave us with easy exit points for the third day and it doesn't matter which direction you'll be going. And there will be plenty more to explore if you have more time.
On the last trip, I didn't warn the first timers of what they were about to see. They seemed to like some of the surprises that the area holds. They thought it was pretty nice being amazed by what they found. We keep to the same plan this time, excect the osprey nest is out of the bag. The area has enough to amaze you on your first trip or your tenth.
All camping and carry some extra gas.
If you don't want to be too surprised, I can suggest the following:
Camp-Fires on Desert and Lava, William T. Hornaday, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908
New Trails in Mexico, Carl Lumholtz, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1912
The Sierra Pinacate, Julian D. Hayden,U of A Press, 1998

I'm gointg to move my name back to the tentative list for this trip. For me to get to Yuma Friday night would require around a 13 hour drive on Friday for me. I also don't have a 2m radio yet. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shakehead.gif
As it gets closer I'll rethink it. I might be able to leave early on Thursday from work and drive half way or something.

13 hour drive - Talk to Jack about it, he used to do closer to 20h, if I remember correctly. Driving the first 3-4 on Thursday night would be a good way, if not the Brazilian way.

I'll check if we have sugar cones, if not we'll have to get some other type of sugar. From previous experience I'd say we need about a bottle of red wine per person http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif Warning: prepare you truck/tent for sleeping before enjoying the stuff!</div>

Chuck and I are still talking about what to do. If we don't go on this, then we will probably go somewhere in SoAZ. Like I told Bob and Peggy last night, my concern is getting back with enough time to get some sleep before work monday night. I've been following the discussion on this trip and it sure looks like fun. I was down there last November and it is really a great area. I have wanted to go again!
I have to decide whether I dump the plans I already had for that weekend and join up with you all. I am thinking that I would much rather do this trip than what I had planned.

Checked with the Hacienda and a room is $56 plus tax for $63 total. All they have left are rooms with two queen beds. We are considering leaving home early Saturday morning to save that money for car parts (or beer). Also considering pitching our tent Friday night near Yuma. What time will this dog and pony show hit the road? I assume you will have breakfast prior to departure, we could meet you there. We are in Mesa, only a 3 hour drive away.

I think that sounds pretty good.
Why are the rooms at the Hacienda so expensive now? Maybe it is the time of year, not as hot, so they can get better prices. Well, if I go, I will probably part with the $ at the Hacienda so I can go to Fat Harvey's on Friday evening! And I wouldn't have a 4 hour drive Saturday morning.

I continue to be amazed at the interest in this trip. I'm really going to have to give the PR guy a raise. Of course, I've been on variations of the trip several times since last July and I wouldn't miss it.</div>
I'm not surprised that the Hacienda is getting more for their rooms, although I've never paid more than $30 for a single. He did tell me that his season was from February on. Good for him, because I don't know how they survive at $30 a room. I've never made a reservation but it sounds like I need to make one. Fat Harvey's is always a fun part of these trips. </div>
It could also be time to initiate part two of these trips. That would be staying in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora. That takes a little planningand thought and I'm not sure that I'm ready for it yet. Baja, can you help with rooms in Mexico? A Fat Harvey's type of meeting place in Mexico would be great. (Which means any place that will have us)</div>
Let's make the meeting time in Yuma on Saturday at 9AM Arizona Time (MST) and if we meet in Mexico we'll push it back to 10AM because it takes about an hour to get from Yuma to San Luis. I'll give more information on the meeting time and place after we get some feedback.</div>

For those of us who have not done this route, could we please get a re-cap on the necessary items for this trip such as auxiliary fuel, any equipment of particular interest, and what about paperwork? My guess is since we are doing Sonora, we can do the "Sonora Only" ticket. Of course we will need mexican auto insurance.
Anyway, let us know. Thanks http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif It would be good if everyone carries ten gallons of extra fuel so you are covered.
You do not need a a permit to import your vehicle for this trip. So Sonora only is not needed. Both your tourist card and vehicle card from October are still valid. Unforunately, you don't need either one for this trip. This trip will be in a tourist free of cost zone.
Mexican Auto Insurance is always needed south of the border. See other threads if you need help.

I have to ask, Is ten gallons of extra fuel necessary? Will five not do? I'm assuming the last chance to gas up would be in El Golfo or south of San Luis somewhwere. What distances did previous trips experience over this route? I suppose that some of the money saved on the motel could be used for a second gas can.

may want to clarify his intended routeI'll clarify as much as I know. We'll head south to El Golfo and gas. We'll take the beach out to the salt pond road and head to the railroad tracks. We'll start looking for roads into the Sierra Pinacate from the railroad tracks. I know of two possibilities and there might be others. Our goal is to explore these roads and see where they go. If they don't go anywhere we'll be close to Rocky Point for our entry to Sick Springs Road. From Sick Springs Road we have some more roads to explore and see where they go. We'll exit somewhere on Highway 2 between San Luis and Lukeville. This is an exploration and there are many unknowns. I wouldn't count on any gas after leaving El Golfo.
BajaXplorer said...
Is ten gallons of extra fuel necessary? Will five not do?Here's why I recommend ten gallons. Because I don't know how much we'll need. At some point, we'll probably have to make a decision based on the need for gas. We did last trip. The longer we delay that decision, the more roads we can explore.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif
How much extra gas to bring is an individual decision.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/devil.gif But I think it should spark some discussion on the forum about the range of different vehicles and drivers.
Which provides a segue to the soapbox. This is for all participants.
This trip will be in remote areas with no facilities. Many of the roads and paths are unknown to me or others on the trip and there is an element of danger involved. You are responsible for your own survival and comfort. Please take everything that your vehicle and occupants will need. People on the forum can help you decide but the decision and the responsibility for that decision is yours.
Guns and drugs can get you in a lot of trouble in Mexico. Don't bring them.

Bob, truck has 2 meter (IC-V8000). Will also have my HT (IC-W32A)which Scott can use for trip.</div>
Also have expanded extra fuel to 10 gals.</div>
Scott, ham radio operation in MX, we are not legal w/o the proper paperwork. I have never considered it a necessity. Two meter (VHF) radios cannot talk to FRS (UHF). FRS is in the 70cM band (462.56--). My HT is a dual band (2m & 70 cm) and has TX mod, so should be able to do the FRS freqs (although, I have not tried it). </div>
Baja, we are bringing a few firelogs for ambiance (LOL).</div>

It's no more of a problem than it was on trip over New Years. Maybe Jack can help?
Scott
I think BajaXplorer has given a you a real nice overview of the radio situation in this thread and the other. I don't think you'll be happy with the handheld. BajaExplorer has made a generous offer to let you use his handheld. I think you should take him up on the offer for this trip. You should be able to hear a lot of what's going on and someone should always be close enough to you to you'll be able to transmit to one of us. You'll have a good opportunity to see if you like it.
So for this trip if both of you canborrow radios from others that will be on the trip, we'll call it an all two-meter trip and cut down on the confusion that occurs with multiple bands. We'll use 4WD 01.

Let's bring some firewood.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif
Meals
Everyone is on their own for meals. After Saturday breakfast, we probably won't be near any facilities for eating. Be flexible with your lunch preparations. Have something that you can eat on the go.

I have a good friend named Wes (http://www.bajataco.com/Bradshaws/L_Bradshaws_WesMap.jpg) who will be joining us on the trip. He's driving a VW vanagon Syncro 4wd. I have invited him to the forum, but not sure if he will have time to stop in before the trip.

While traveling in Mexico, we often encounter gas stations that only have the Magna grade of fuel (like El Golfo de Santa Clara). This fuel varies around 84 octane. I found this great little product from Outlaw that has 4 small octane boost bottles in it. Each 3.5oz can treats 20 gallons of fuel, raising the octane rating by 2. It is $9 a box. I bought mine from Autozone
Magna fuel? As in "leaded"? (blue pumps) I think maybe you mean Magna Sin (unleaded - green pumps) which is probably a coupla points below our 87 octane stuff?

BajaXplorer, thanks for the link. It's too much for me to digest before this trip but think there could be ideas for future trips.</div>
Ok, I'll say something about gas. Peggy says I should be an expert.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cry.gif </div>
The leaded gas in Mexico was called Nova. The pumps were blue. It cause a lot of cars to ping and behave badly because of it's poor octane ratings (about 81). Nova is no longer sold in Mexico. Magna Sin (without) Plomo (lead)was Mexico's first unleaded gas. It was called Magna Sin and now it's just called Magna and the color coding is green. It's rated at 87 octane and I haven't had any problems with it. The premium gas is called Premium and is rated at 93 octane. It's color coded red.</div>
Looks like we're going to have beautiful weather and the tides will be favorable. I look forward to seeing everyone and having a great adventure. </div>

How many wine drinkers do we have? We need to plan on how much red wine to bring for the Feuerzangenbowle. A cheap, dry red wine will work, we'll enhance it with the spices, sugar and the 151.</div>

We only planned for Feuerzangenbowle, that's the drink where we mix red wine with spices and then carmelize the sugar coneinto it.The burning rum does the carmelizing.</div>

As you already said, we make a brew out of it, so I suppose its not expensive wine. We usually get something inexpensive, since the spices, sugar and rum 'ruin' a good wine http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif, but it's a good drink, the 2 times we did it with this group we didn't have enough http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif </div>

I never have been at Algodones or Tecate, but many people I know have been turned back at Tijuana. I usually take empty cans across at TJ and Mexicali and fill them on the other side.

Guess we'll be 14 people of those I think 8 will more than just try the Feuerzangenbowle, so I think we should probably have 8 bottles of wine (it's allways better to have too much, the stuff can be saved and warmed up anytime).
Feuerzangenbowle ingredients and who brings what:
spices, sugar, pot, special'tools'- WhiteThaiGer
rum 151 - Al
2 btls dry red wine - BX
2 btls dry red wine - Baja
4 (?) btls of dry red wine - WhiteThaiGer.
The infos I found say one person can bring 1l - 3l of wine or liqor to Mexico. So even if the lower is true we'll be way below the limit (unless any of you carry loads of additional stuff), just might want o spread the bottles.

Hey everyone!
I just wanted to send a quick note on the trailer, to let you know that everything is fine.
Making the right onto MEX2 there was an abrupt curb. The combination of the turn and my slow speed allowed the trailer to pop over the curb androll over, and drag on the top for a few feet.
The swivel hitch made righting the trailer easy (using Doron's winch), and caused no damage to the draw bar, or coupler. The only significant damage was to the front rack (one of those hitch-haul receiver racks), which took 95% of the impact and worked as an outrigger as the trailer rolled over. The 1/4" aluminum supports on the top of the trailer got a little road rash (they are taller than the tent material. I am totally amazed that NO structural or tent damage occurred. The vinyl top was slightly damaged, but I actually have another one in the garage (the luck!)
Even this little event couldn't even slightly curb my absolute LOVE for that trip! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/supercool.gif
A special thanks to Chris and Doron for their help. The team effort got the trailer off of the road in very little time. Here are a few pictures that show the little trailer that could, a few minutes ago, just fine in the garage, and a picture of the rackthat saved it. Enough for now.
