The greater Phoenix Orienteering Club (I am not currently a member) is offering a land navigation class on the 1st and 3rd of April, 2004. This class teaches traditional navigation (compass), topo reading, triangulation, etc. I haven't used any of these skills for many years and think they are a valuable companion to the GPS.

I think it would be a good refresher, and I plan on attending. It is $100

Something like this is on my list. The class date and location are a little inconvenient though. I'll look for something like that locally.

I would love to go. Come on Uwe, one more reason to visit and do some driving in Az.
But if you find some local classes, please let me know too.
I would take the kids for these classes on way or the other.

Scott, can plan a weekend? Maybe some dinner with the families.

Thanks,
-JACK

We will see. I hope I can make it.

You have to start to know me. Sometimes (or should I say most of the times) the only confirmation I can give is 2 hours before the trip.

The kids have competitive soccer, volleyball, and back horse ridding. Between the lessons and competition, time disappear.
Add work to this equation and you will see that I need to use the last minutes to find-out if I can really make it.

Work is going very hard these days. I am still in the office. I blow a date with my wife today. It will be this way until April.

Thanks for the offer.
Do you live close to Doron?

I have to pay him a visit to follow-up on an offer he made during our last trip. Poor guy, he probably just gave the offer to be polite. He is in trouble now. A battery bracket and a baggage compartment platform like his...

Uwe,

I am not even sure you need this training. You seems very good with maps and other navigation tools.

Now, I have an idea.
We could do a clinic in a weekend for people (like mehttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/blush.gif) that needs to learn how to navigate with recreation maps and TOPOS. No GPS allowed. Then mix use with GPS.
That would be fun and increase the safety on the trips. At the end we would have a barbecue http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/burger.gif

I think you "should" preregister. I dont know if these classes fill up fast or not. I am going to attend, and see how things go. I have done some navigation training (in the Air Force), but would like a refresher. I am considering entering a local adventure race http://www.desertragear.com/ , and need the skills. Anyone interested in a adventure racing let me know. I am morking on puting together a team...

I've watched things like the Eco-Challenge and Raid Gauloises on tv. Now those are the top events.</div>
It's interesting and sounds like the events you are looking at are not toooo long.I don't have much paddle or any rope skills...Could be fun and somewhat of a challenge. Have you donean adventure racebefore? You are planning for the April 17 event? How many in your team so far and what are their experience level?</div>

I have never participated in an adventure race, but I am somewhat familiar with multi-sport events (I competed in 12+ traithlons about 10 years ago). The event I am considering is not too long about 8 hours, and is not a big production. This event does not require rope skills (for climbing or repelling).

Here is the deal...

I would like to enter and compete in the April 17th event. The goal would be to enjoy ourselves and the challenge. I don't care if we finish in the back of the pack.

I figure all of these skills will help us enjoy the trips we take even more, and if most of the people on the team are also my travel companions, that is even better. Our ability to work together efficiently in a stressful situation can do nothing but help on other adventures.

Plus it will be a ton of fun, and something I have always wanted to do!
