View Full Version : Central AZ this weekend (1-17-04)

Hey all. Scott got me all worked up talking about trails and tires and the such (so I can blame this all on him http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif ), so I am thinking about running upper woodpecker and upper ajax this weekend. U/W is not to bad (bring sliders), U/A is a good one, not suitable for those who don't like dragging metal on rocks (I got more damage on UA than I did on the Rubicon trail).
Any interest?

Upper Ajax sounds interesting. I have never driven the entire Martinez Canyon trail either. What day were you thinking? Sat is pretty good for me. We need to get Chris to come too.

I will probably have to pass this weekend. There is a good chance I will be doing some wrenching (mods) on the Taco. BUT, I am probably going to be planning on a desert trip somewhere in western AZ for early Feb.

U/W ate my idler up up and then Martinez finished her off. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif I have a four day weekend this weekend, but little $$$, so I can't make it out. In February I might be able to make a weekend trip out. I have a holiday Feb 16th, so that could be agood weekend for me anyway. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

What do you think about Martinez canyon for Saturday? Maybe Upper Ajax too if there is time. With just a few trucks we should move fast...
Let me know and I can invite some others (like John with the FJ80 on 35's). Cool! Adventure awaits....

We can do the Martinez Mine loop. The scenery back there is just awesome, and the trail is quite a bit easier than upper ajax (more bypasses). I haven't found anyone else interested in running upper ajax since it really isn't long wheelbase/one locker/IFS friendly. We won't be able to do upper ajax the same day though. Martinez is WAY back there (1/2 hour - 45 minutes past UA), and I usually come out through Box Canyon rather than come all the way back up to Cottonwood Canyon.

Sold! Lets meet at the railroad tracks and price road at 10:00 on Saturday 1/17/2004??? I am working on getting a few others to attend. Everyone is so impressed with the canyon after the mill, that I just have to go there now... If we want more adveture we can run Jackhandle, or take the draggon backs out instead of the Box (it takes you high on the ridgelines instead of through the box.
What do you think? Anyone else coming?

Bring anyone who wants to come along. Not many people have expressed interest on the other boards I posted this trip on.

I am not sure which direction you are coming from, but Price Road is directly (15 yards) south of the railroad tracks that goes east/west through Florence. We will meet at the south east corner of Price Road and 79. N33 03 37.9 W111 22 41.9 (NAD27)
See you there!

Dammit, I should have seen this coming. The first time I start thinking about getting out to play since the beginning of November, and one of the "other" night shift guys is going on vacation...so I might end up working this weekend.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cry.gif </div>
I give it a 50/50 chance right now. I have one more person to talk to about it to see if he can cover, otherwise it is all me. I'll know tonight how it will all turn out. </div>
On the plus side of this, if I do end up working, they will be paying me a ungodly amount of $$$ to do it (enough to pay for 1/2 the lift kit once uncle sam gets done with it).http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/supercool.gif </div>
I'll let 'yall know as soon as I know.</div>

See you there GT. It might just be us, so we will make quick work of the trail, and maybe have time to play around elsewhere. If you enjoy taking photographs, I would like to poke around and document the area a little better. We will take lots of video of the trail too.
I am ready for some action!

If you have time, the mines at the top before you start heading down are cool to explore. Goodtimes knows the ones I mean, he was there. I never did go down the long ladder to the lower tunnel, I'm not great with heights and a very long wooden ladder wasn't my cup of tea!

Well, today was filled with adventure to say the least. Beautiful trail, great people, and drivetrain carnage! I will write it up in the previous trips section.
Quick summary:
Brett- Good driver, and ran the trail in a stock height Tacoma Crew Cab TRD. I was very impressed. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/yeah.gif
Goodtimes- Good driver with trail experience. He tried all of the hard areas, and did great. Other than getting hung a few times up due to stock clearances, him AND the Jeep were impressive. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif
Me- Everything was great until the last obstacle (before the trail gets easy and the switchbacks). I took the steepest climb to the left (sheer face to the left) I got the Jeep lined up correctly and started to pull the front over the top when the driver side u-joint blew up. It was an impressive sound. I played on the hard lines today (which I usually dont) which was fun in it's self. I drove the rest of the way out in 2wd, except for a few spots where I used the air locker to have the passenger front axle pull. Thats the good thing about the Jeep. I can leave it in the garage and fix it.
I was a fun day, and sooooo beautiful back in there!
