Someone contacted Roger and I from Iowa, wanting to join us for our fall tours. They will be flying in to Reno and need to rent a 4wd from there, to hook up with us in Mammoth. I am aware of the rentals out of Mammoth and Bishop area, but know nothing of the Reno area. Anyone have any ideas?

We rented Mitsubishi Mentero from National in Reno. We got it because there was no cars to rent and we get free upgrades thru work. We seem to remeber it being about $75-85 per day plus mileage. It was a nice road vehicle, not something I'd take off the pavement, I see better tires on mini-vans.
Not that this helps, but something to check into.
Good luck

I rented a Montero in Reno two years ago, and used it on some moderate trails near Mammoth. The vehicle did well, but as MrS indicated, the tires are P rated. If you get a chance to run a trail near Mammoth I would highly recommend Laurel Lakes. It is 15 min from town, and offers some challenge, and incredible scenery. It had one of the most beautiful camp sites I have stayed in.

The first link includes GPS data.
I have several books with trails in the area. I would be happy to scan some nice ones and email them to you.

I invited them to go up to Laurel Lake, last time we where with them in Mammoth, But they wouldn't go. I seem to remember something about needing to watch Oprha.
Was your camp site along the creek, next to the trees??

Oh, you guys are too funny! Like I would stay home at watch Oprah and not go to Laurel Lakes! I was probably running a tour somewhere else in the area. Laurel Lakes is on our to do list - just never time "todo", though. One of these days!
And Steve, what were you doing renting a vehicle - was there something wrong with yours???? Or was this pre-4wdrive days?
Thanks for the info - I'll pass it on to Roger and he can pass it on to the guy in Iowa who wants to hook up with us for our Bodie & Golden Leaves tours. I do know all about those "p" tires on the rentals, and I also know sometimes they don't actually have the 4-wheel drive engaged. On a Mojave Expedition years ago, one guy couldn't make it up a long by-pass out of Cudahy Camp, and Harry had to tow him. When we got him up it, the guys looked under he hood, and the 4 wheel drive was not hooked up. That could have been a dangerous situation and a possible liable suit for the rental company. So these are things we tell people to look for - in addition to the fact that some rental companys won't let you take the 4wd vehicle off road. Steve, knows the routes we are doing on these tours - a rental 4 wheel drive will do just fine.
Scott, I probably have all the trail books you are mentioning, but am interested if you have something I haven't heard of yet. I have all of Roger Mitchell's books, I have the Back Country Adventures both Southern and Northern California, and two walls of bookcases full of other both history and tour books for that area and more. Even old 1960's tour books. Not to mention 25 years of exploring the area and taking others out there for the past 14.
Oh wait, Steve, I guess you are right about Oprah - here's the story: http://explorehistoricalif.tripod.com/xplorhistcal/id2.html
Of course, there was the time that I wanted to go to Laurel Lakes and you were busy showing people Bigfoot printshttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif

By the way, if you were at Laurel Lakes right now, you'd be freezing your ass off in the snow!

And Steve, what were you doing renting a vehicle.Yeap, you sure did. We invided you to go with us, but we figuered it was a lead thing. You could have lead. You guys had to go to the Condo, and when we met you for dinner that night, you where telling us about what you saw on TV. No big deal, you don't like to travel with us, we got over it, I just never forget, kinda like Roger's ticket.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The reason we rented a car was because I didn't have an easy (cheap) way to check my truck on the fight to Sac. We where doing the snow trian over Donner Pass to Reno. So from there we rented a car and did a few day trip down Nev. 95. Thats a neat trip, if you like trains and have not done it yet.

Haven't done the snow train, but sounds like fun. I'd do it with you and Anita sometime, but apparently, I don't like to travel with you. Could have something to do with Bigfoot following you around, it's not you personally.

"something to do with Bigfoot following you around"
I think he is ahead of me, at least untill he showed up on DezUSA in PD post. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I know this is geeting off subject (un-like bigfoot) but I also think if anyone is in that area, the Donner Camp site is a neat stop, nowdays, vs when the Donner Party was there. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/burger.gif

Yes, I have been to the Donner Site, and many of the other places they camped at. We did a camping vacation up there with the dogs Jessie & Jake when they were young. We camped at Prosser Reservoir campground, if I remember right, which was the site of one of the significant Donner events.
I have both of the popular books on the Donner Party, and never tire of reading them. The story always fascinates me - not so much the fact that they had to eat each other to survive, but just all of the things theywent through in general from the very start of the trip. Also an interesting study in human nature, and how people react under stress - the disagreements over major decisions, the banishment of Reed, stuff like that.
