Bob and Al,
What was the stove you recommended Marcelo to get?
He told me that he got his at Sport Challet based on your recommendation, he could not remember the rational or brand. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif
Anybody can comment on stoves for camping?
Thanks,
-JACK

I think you need to come up with some requirements, before we can really help with recommendations. Things like:</div>
What kind of meals are you going to cook? -> number of burners needed</div>
How cold will it be when you camp? -> some of the stoves with gas cans don't start up well when it get's to around freezing. We had that last weekend, when our coleman 'pump stove' came right up, but can for the gas can stove had to be warmed up first (over our stove http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif )</div>

Our stove has the name of Mr. Stove. I don't think it is manufactured anymore but there are copies of it out there. Ours is compact and durable, going on 15 years. We originally bought it for picnics at the Hollywood Bowl but it has worked very well for our adventure travel. Butane fuel is supplied in cans. One burner. You'll get to see it this weekend. You'll also get to see that I don't do much cooking. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/burger.gifOff to the ballet. Going to see the ball breaker.

Uwe,
Good question.
We don' do much cooking. Or should I say no cooking. This is the first stove I am getting. I will use it to warm watter for a soup and to do some macaroni and coffee. Who knows, just simple things since I am 0 at the kitchen.
I got the Coleman two burners after talking to you during our last trip. But mine is not like yours. I just have the can option. It is a kind of compact unit.
Still when I go alone in a trip I will need just one burner. Marcelo told me about the one Bob recommended him. One burner with some kind of gas that burned hotter that the Coleman can. For $25.00 I would buy a smaller unit.
Thanks for the question. Bob thanks for the information. I will stop by Sport Challet one of these days to see what they have.
This is not critical just a nice to have.
Thanks,
-JACK

I think some have bought them at Sports Chalet. We also bought a cheap one at Big 5. I don't think it would last on road but it's good in our earthquake kit. Take it out of the box and look at it before you buy it.
Correction on the ballet. It was "The Nutcracker"http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/blush.gif

Don't know that you have to have a separate one. Good camping gear, kept well organized at the house takes care of most what's in that kit.

ball breaker... http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif ROFLMAO!!!
I will add 2 cents (or centavos http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) on the stove. If you are on a trip that is long enough that it will be a pain in the butt to carry enough propane bottles, or you don't want to worry about finding or remembering to bring the propane bottles... a stove (http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=442-725&categoryid=2020&submittingpage=subcategory.asp ) that will burn unleaded gasoline is pretty cool. (I mean... HOT) Chances are that you will usually have some unleaded fuel handy http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

Nice Baja,
Uwe has something that goes with gas too.
No time to buy anything more this year. Neither money.

Yes, we have one of those stoves Baja linked to and a bigger dual burner unit that also runs with unleaded. Since the unleaded is so dirty we run them on white fuel though.
Both stoves work great. The big one get's used a lot when we are out. On the last trip we even tried a little of that catering idea and meals for 5 people were prepared on our stove.

On this last trip to the Hualapai Mtns, I made some steamed salmon and garnet red yams on our little Peak1 DualFuel. The trip before that I did shrimp and scallops in a hazelnut white cheddar sauce with zuccinni...
Anyway, on the Hualapai trip, Al told me about a nice little collection of different stoves that he has. One of them was called a "kangaroo kitchen". Care to share that info on the forum Al? I found a pic of one...

Sure looks the same. I bought mine back in 1974, I haven't used it in over 20 years. The main problem with this unit is there are 2 burners & you burn both at the same time. There isn't independent control of the burners. You can use the griddle & also steam etc.
I'll have to get it out & fill you in on the balance of it's uses.

Only if you feel like it Al - if the stove isn't very efficient, and you haven't used it in 20 years, maybe we should skip it http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have a coleman dual fuel. I bought it so that I could use gasloline in a pinch.
Do you all think I will have any trouble lighting it in freezing weather?
I think the picture attached is mine.

I have the same one. Now I don't know about arctic, but I've used it in the teens (F). No problem with freezing weather as far as the stove is concered, freezing fingers while pumping is a different issuehttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

Took it out last night &put the propane to it. It lit off like it was used yesterday. Can be used as a broiler (with smoke flavor or without), toaster, steamer, stove & of course the griddle.
It does more than I want to mess with. Opening & heating a can of something is all I'm into anymore.
Maybe Salsita would like to play around with it?

Well, if Salsita doesn't want to mess with it, I might like to try it. Maybe you could bring it on the next trip. (I know - uneccessary weight - but if we aren't crawling stuff, it shouldn't be a big deal http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

Probably not following the thread here. Just what I use and stick with.
I use the old reliable Coleman two burner stove. I truck camp when I go on multi-day trips and the old Coleman works just fine and is simple. Someone noted that cold weather affects stoves, my old Coleman fires up with no problem.
