View Full Version : Christmas & New Year - Part I - El Golfo, Sonora - 12/26~28/03

We'll leave from Yumaat 9AM local time on the 26th. (this is a change from 10AM, we have a more aggressive schedule for the first day)
Motel in Yuma is the Hacienda for the 25th.
This will be two nights of camping.I don't think both nights will be in the same place. First night somewhere along the beach between El Golfo and Bahia Adair. It's my goal to map all the roads in the area so I'll be doing a lot of driving. You can hang out at the beach if that suits you better.
The second night will probably be spent on the north shore of Bahia Adair or the southern edges of the Sierra Pinacate. I've got a road that's been nagging me for years that I call the Smuggler's Road. We're going to see if we can find it from the south and see if really does work it's way into the Sierra Pinacate. If it does you will also be treated so some of the fine sights of this historic volcanic area.
It's a journey of exploration and fun at the beach. I expect we'll have enough daylight to see how close the roads go to 32114 on our way home on Sunday.
Tourist cards and vehicle permits are not required for part I.
Added 12/12/03
We've talked about extra gas.
Please have your Mexican insurance in advance.
We are going to change the original schedule. We will head east from San Luis Rio colorado on Highway 2. The first stop will be to explore roads around 32 degrees north and 114 degrees west. We're not going to try and hike the dunes just get an idea of the roads in the area. We'll keep going east to western entrance of the Sierra Pinacate, about ninety miles from San Luis Rio. We can stopand see Crater McDougal, Crater Molina and Tinajas de Los Papagos while looking for the road south to the railroad. If we find it, it will be on to a camping spot on the beach for a couple of days.

No hotel needed for Part I, correct?I'll be staying at the Hacienda in Yuma on the night of the 25th. Rate is around $30.00. Gives us a good start on Friday morning.
I'm thinking of starting this trip to first go by 32114 and check out the roads there. We can take the road around the mountains and see where it goes. If we get lucky we'll be able to go around to the east side and take the wash out to the highway.
That will lead us into the western side of the Pinacate near the microwave relay station off Highway 2. We'll go south past the Sierra Hornaday, the craters and take the road south from Tinajas De Los Papagos. We'll see where the road leads us. We'll get to do some sightseeing and we should be able to do this in a day.
This will put us into El Golfo for one or two nights and if anybody is really comfortable and wants to stay longer they can.
What do you think, Al?

That sounds good to me. We need to have a good handle on fuel planning when going this route. Watch how much we use exploring around the mountains. Fuel is available at San Luis, Puerto Penasca & El Golfo only, which means having to go for fuel can take us out of the way.

I've been look at some of satellite photos of the area and thought I'd post a couple to get you in the mood. The first is an overview of the area. The red line on the top is highway 2 and you can see a loop into the western part of the Sierra Pinacate to Tinajas De los Papagos. Our goal will be to get from there to the blue line in the south that shows the road along the railroad. </div>
The second attachment is a closeup of the Tinjas De Los Papagos loop. It's a fascinating area. </div>

Cool Uwe,
I hope you can make it.
Here is an update on the gear I ordered.
- Cot, arrived, tested, approved by the boss. I will ordersome more. They fit in a nice bag the size of a beach umbrella. Just a couple of pounds heavy I would guess.
- Hats and gloves. Got them. All comfortable and warm.
- Fold-able table. Received and approved. A kind of heavy, plastic cover vs. aluminum, but it will work*
*Al or Uwe, where did you get yours with the aluminum top?
- Got some blankets too.
- Gas and watter cans to arrive this week.
Note: My mother in law is not coming. Maybe by the end of January. No need for that extra seat.
I am going to talk to Marcelo to jump in here.

Bob,
I am playing with the maps before the trip for a change.
I can not see any road besides HW2 in the area you mentioned. I am using the Guia Roji. Checked Al's Mexico map, same deal.
I guess I need a better map for this area.
The only other Mexico map I got is the Baja Almanac. It seems good for Baja.
What to get for these kind of trips? More specifically for this trip?
Is there something similar to the Baja Almanac?
Thanks,

I'm glad to see that you checking out the maps. I don't know of any accurate maps of Mexico. We are lucky to have the Baja Almanac. It is detailed but not completely accurate. Traveling in the rest of the country the situation is worse. I travel in Mexico by research and intuition. Sometimes there is a road, sometimes there isn't. The chance of the road being on a map is pretty slim. The satellite images that I've posted on the forum show roads that you won't find on any maps. We'll be going into the unknown hoping to find a path.

One of the best maps is the AAA Baja map, This should be a must. There are also 2 topo books of Baja Norte & Baja Sur, they are ok & somewhat usable. They replaced the old Baja Explorer topo map book, which is out of print. In any case, I've never seen maps, even topos, that have all the roads on them.

I know a lot of people think that Mexico and bellow are all the same. Well, I can tell you that it is not. When I will show you some nice tools to explore it.
Just need to remember to bring these to our next trip.

I have some news.
Eric is getting sick. I am a bit too. If he is really getting sick, and it is what is going around, Georgia and the kids will not make to this trip.
I may make Part I then come back to get them for Part III, if they recover by then. Just don't know what to do with Part II. Will know the next days.
Now that I got some gear to make camping more confortable for the family. I guess the problem here was too much planning. Just need to let it happen.
I have way too much planning at work. Need to relax more at the outise world.

You don't need a tourist card for part one. It's easy to get when you cross for part three at Tijuana. Just wait until then. You do need vehicle insurance and documents to help you get back to this side of the border.
