View Full Version : Aux. fuel tank 4 Tacoma
Downey off road makes a15 gal aux tank for the Tacoma. I fits above the spare tire, lowering the spare tire about 4". It almost $500 http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cry.gif
I know of a friend who would like one, I could use one. I wondering if we got a "group-buy" worked out, we might save some $$$ if you had ever planned on doing this anyway.
Something to kick around, if you want to, I can check with Downey, but I'd think we need at least 4 orders.
I know Baja has an Aux tank and I really like it. But he had to move his spare tire, if I do another tire mount, I would like to to be for a 2nd spare.
This is more of kicking around "our options" than "plans" for me.

I am guessing that it will not work for the 4Runner right?
Steve, I got a reply from the person selling parts of the Tacoma. Do you want to get the fuel tank?

No 4runner tank anymore. They used to make them but stopped selling them.

WOW - I haven't visited this site in a long time, but it looks like Northwest Metal Products (http://www.nwmp.com/catalog3.htm#toyota) has auxiliary fuel tanks for the 2nd gen (11 1/2 gal or 20 gal if you relocate the spare) and 3rd gen (15 gal) 4runners. You guys better give them a call. One more thing to add to the mod list for you 4runner guys http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif
Not sure, but it looks like Uwe's model is gravity feed (NICE!). Jack's model will require a transfer pump.

Here is an old discussion (http://www.barneymc.com/toy_root/techtalk/body/gas_tank.htm) on aux. fuel tanks... some mention is made of Aero tanks (http://www.aerotanks.com/) in SoCal.

Baja,
Apparently they don't make one for the 4Runner 96~01.
Also, ~ 500.00. I don't use extra gas that often.
Thanks for the link.
Now getting back to topic of this Thread, Marcelo sent me some prices of trucks in Brazil (Brasil).
toyota hilux gas sw4 1997 R$ 30.500,00 7 sits
hilux double cab 94 R$ 28.000,00
hilux double cab diesel 97 R$ 33.800,00
LR Discovery Diesel 95 R$ 35.900,00
LR Defender 110 98 R$ 43.000,00
Mitsu L200 98 diesel R$ 31.900,00
Conversion on the R$ to US$ is 3 to 1.
That means that for about US$ 11K you can get a hilux double cab diesel 97 R$ 33.800,00.
The question is, can we bring one legally to the US?
Ship it to Mexico then drive crossing to the US. Then what?
What are the rules? If there isn't smog for diesel trucks, does that mean you can have in California? I am sure you have to pay some import fee to keep it here for a while.
But, what if you cross the board each 6 months to keep it legal?

"Under 49 U.S.C. § 30112(b)(9) (formerly section 108(i) of the Act), "any motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old" is not subject to importation restrictions. All vehicles less than 25 years old must be determined eligible for importation by one of the following methods before the vehicle may be imported under contract with a Registered Importer as described in the Vehicle Importation Guidelines."</div>
It seems to me like it might be a royal pain in the butt (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/)</div>
