December 31st La Pinta Hotel Ensenada
January 1stLa Pinta Hotel Catavina or Rancho Santa Ines
January 2nd Hotel or Camping?
January 3rd La Pinta Hotel Catavina or Old Millin San Quintin
January 4th Drive home

This is a trip that requires some driving. Spending New Years Eve in Ensenadagives us theluxury of an easy drive to Catavina and time to explore some of the old dirt highway, maybe go to El Marmol. The drive home from Catavina will be an full days drive. It's a pleasant drive and we may even have time to stop at the L.A. Cetto Winery.

The question is or will be where do we spend the night of January 2nd. I've attached a map of thepossible route to the Pacific and back to the highway. It is about 100 miles of dirt road. If it is 10 mile an hour road that is 10 hours of travel. If it is 20 mile an hour road we might have time to make a few stops but it will be a full day. There are miles of interesting roads that I haven't included. The weather could get ugly and camping uncomfortable but we won't know until we are there.

I'm am leaning towards camping out somewhere near the Pacific but I am going to leave the decision up to the group. We don't have to make it now unless anyone doesn't want to carry their camping gear.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shocked.gifThere shouldn't be any problem at the La Pinta just showing up on a Friday night. Saturday is usually when they are full.

There is the option of camping everynight except for Ensenada. When can talk about the options.

Adventurers

Bob & Peggy
Al
Dos Platos Y Salsita
Jack and crew
Doron and crew

I have made reserations at La Pinta Catavina for all three nights. We'll do day trips out of Catavina.

Camping allows for more flexibility in exploring. So I am for camping unless the weather is really evil (like those winds we had in March, or heavy down pours)

A supply of gas is not reliable in Catavina. It may be there or it may not. My experience is that we have a 75% chance of finding gas. The nearest reliable gas is in El Rosario which is 76miles from Catavina. That means we'll have to plan on 300-350 files without gas. That falls within the range of my Yukon and I will be carrying an extra ten gallons. </div>
Tourist permits are required by the Mexican government for a trip this deep into Baja. They cost $20.00 per person. I don't of know of any place that anyone will be checking to see if you have one, but I always have one. Let me know if you need information on how to obtain one as you cross the border.</div>

How about if you do Part I to Part III? Can you manage the time? It is after Christimas and before New Year. Not much work should come in your way.

Bob,

Yes, please tell us about the tourist permit.
I remember you talking about it before. Lets refresh it one one more time if you don't mind.
I will do it in San Diego or arrive a day earlier in Yuma to take care of it.
How about that temporary import deal? Do we need one or just Mexican insurance?

Bob,
If you want to do Mission Santa Maria, that will take one day in & out. Not much else to do for that day, considering the limited daylight. It is definitely a nice run. 2-3 hrs in, 2-3 hrs out, 3-4 hrs exploring the valleys & palm canyons in the area.

Vehicle permits are not required for this part of the trip. They are not required for any part of Baja or the El Golfo area. You will need to get Mexican insurance.

Tourist cards require a passport or a birth certificate to obtain. They cost $20. When crossing at Tijuana, you stay in the extreme right lane that says something to declare. There is a parking area there under the big metal canopy. The immagration office is to the right. You go there and fill out the tourist card. You go to the bank and pay your fee and then go back to the immigration office to have the card validated. The process is similar at any of the border crossings you'll just have to ask where the immigration office is. Then ask where the bank is. Cards are good for multiply entries and are good for 180 days.

About stopping in Puerto Nuevo for lobster. We'll (Peggy and I) will be crossing the border at Tecate. You should consider crossing at Tecate also. Very peaceful and relaxing and the drive is very nice. That would mean no lobster but maybe some wine at L.A. Cetto.</div>

Hotel reservations take the adventure out of the way. But it has been cold at night. The family would start complaining too much.
I need to give them a break.

Good idea. But, first let her live if you for a year just for testing. Then you let me know how the experience was. I like tests ...

OK with me. If the lines are shorter than TJ, it will be great.

I am lost on this back road to Catavina deal. I guess I need to look at the map for a change.

Just so you don't get much excited some years back we spent New Years eve in Ensenada. It was ok (lower case), not great. Again, we came from the party city, Rio de Janeiro.

Just a reminder. The period of time the Tourist Card is valid is not automatic, it is set by the official filling out the card for you. When (if) you get tourist cards ask for 180 days (the max) and for travel to Cabo so you will have unlimited travel in Baja for six months. They usually will do this without asking, but if you put Catavina as your destination for a few days and they make the card for just that, you will have to pay for a new card next trip. And for the current trip the Catavina destination would limit any change of plan to go further south.
Also, over many trips to Baja, the only place I have ever been asked for the card is at the Baja Sur stateline.

Hello tothe HOLIDAY ADVENTURERS (part III).

Bob and I are staying at La Pinta Hotel Ensenada on Wednesday December 31st. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

On January 1, 2, 3 we made reservations at La Pinta Hotel Catavina. We purchased the La Pinta Pass for $314 which includes full breakfasts, margaritas and $10 food coupons - in other words a good deal. Check out www.lapintahotels.com (http://www.lapintahotels.com) for information on the hotel and the pass. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/supercool.gif
Jack, the kids under 12 are free but as long as you are comfortable with two beds in your roomthey would not charge for Pedro.

Those who are camping should check with Al for infohttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/rolleyes.gif on Santa Inez.

NOTE TO ALL HOLIDAY ADVENTURERS NOT GOING TO CATAVINA:
If you have no other plans for December 31st, come meet us in Ensenada to ring-a-ding in the New Year. It would make Jack very happy to have lots of partyhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif people around him!

I should have explained the pass a little better -The wording is a little misleading. The $139 pass is for one person - but they sell the pass only for double occupancy so you must purchase two! Total $312-$314. Also, the pass is good for up to one year at any La Pinta in Baja. I am using the 50% coupon for our Ensenada stay. The Ensenada hotel is only $55 (less 50% for the entire stay) so I am saving the other coupons for the more expensive hotels farther into Baja - should we happen to go back to Baja in 2004 Hmmm, what are the chances?

FYI, Bob and I have our reservations for all four nights at La Pinta. One night for La Pinta Ensenada and three nights at La Pinta Catavina. I don't think there would be a problem if we had to cancel a night in Catavina if we decide to camp some where for a night. I'll check tomorrow to be certain there would not be a penalty.</div>

Peggy,

I am glad your are back to the Forum. I get replies much faster.
Some people are asking me about the plans for this part of the trip.

We will stay in hotels but do some exploration during the day, correct? That is, not just city party.

At this point, Doron, Marcelo, and Jim Wasson are a kind of going but they can't confirm until next week.
I may do a Part II with Doron in Anza Borrego, and then drive together to meet you in Ensenada.

Sorry the plans are kind of open. People are getting sick everywhere. Coordinating multiple families activities is not a sure thing.

You are correct. No just city party for us. In fact, if you can find the city in Catavina - you're welcome to party your heart out. Good luck. Please make sure Georgia doesn't think there is shopping there. It is only the hotel, a roadside cafe and maybe a couple homes. I think some of the group will be camping down the road from La Pinta at Santa Inez. So you may want to talk to Al and Uwe before deciding on the hotel. There will be LOTS of exploring to do. The hotel is just a rest place (and bar/restaurant).

Hey maybe I'll take my Tahoe and meet you guys in Anza. It needs to get some dust on it before it becomes to 'cityfied.'

Nice, by Tuesday I should be able to confirm this. Yeah, we want to see the Tahoe being used on real applications for SUV.

I need a break from the city. I am looking forward this trip(s).

Jack,

As much as I would love to take the Tahoe to Anza, I know that its not a reality right now. My energy is still zapped from the flu. I am resting up as much as possible for the Baja trip. Otherwise - I would be in Anza. Actually, when we bought the truck (New Years Eve last year) we drove straight to Anza Borrego and put it to the test immediately! It did fine but I can see where the side step rail will definitely need to be removed.

I hope Eric feels better soon. Our granddaughter Liliana (3 yrs) has it now too. We were hoping to take the older granddaughter Vanessa (10 yrs) with us on the trip but if the little one is sick - I'm sure Vani will be by New Years. Hope you stay healthy too.

We will stay in hotels but do some exploration during the day, correct? That is, not just city party.

Your going to enjoy reading this after you get to spend some time in Catavina. Most people consider it a necessary evil on the way to someplace better. Those that know are glad the othersarein a hurry to move on.

Theearly weather reports are it will probably be cold (30's) at night andmaybe a little wet. We're going to make thisCatavina based with days trips. You can stay at La Pinta or Santa Ines and we will return to base each night.

Leaving Ensenada we will drive to Catavina withside trips on the way to explore the old road.

Friday, we'll travel to Mission Santa Maria.

Saturday, we'll head toward the Pacific.

Sunday we drive home.

Sounds like a good plan.
The way it stands now, Doron is coming to San Diego. We will do some kind pf part II. Probably Anza Borrego since Doron does not know it yet.
Then we drive together to Ensenada.

Hey just to let you guys know that I am ALL set on the hotel(s).

Got the reservations and passes. I will get the passes paperwork tomorrow on their San Diego office.
Please let me know if you want me to get yours.

I did the deal Peggy recommended. I will use the 50% off on the Ensenada night and save one coupon night for the future. I am sure we will be able to use it next year.

Just hope that by reserving hotel in advance will not spoil my trip. A week in advance seems too long to reservea hotelhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/eyes.gif.

p.s. Doron is doing the same as I write this note. Please add Doron to the list of who is coming.

Got reservations except for Friday night. We may just camp or get a room if they have any, but too much cushy hotels may make us too soft http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

A few last minute details.

It's a hotel based trip if you chose to stay in the hotel. We'll have breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Lunch on the road will be what you bring with you. The hotel will probably make you a lunch to take with you.

The trip to Mission Santa Maria will require a hike of about forty minutes each way. We'll plan on having a picnic in the canyon with what we can carry.

We are going to depart the hotel in Ensenada at 8AM on New Years Day.

See you all in Ensendada for a great start to the New Yearhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

Doron and I are driving with our crew around 12:00. Stop for tourist card, stop for lobster at Puerto Nuevo.
Uwe may join us. But we have not talked yet.

See you tonight.
