This is not the perfect forum for this question, I haven't done much reseach on my own yet....., BUT a few the regulars here have their own websites/domain names, so here it goes, maybe you can help get me pointed in the right directions and share your experiences.
As I am preparing the pics for the Thanksgiving trip I am thinking we may need our own website.
Some requirments I think I have http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif :
- reliable, i.e. max uptime
- inexpensive
- at least 100MB webspace
- 100MB ftp space (to share stuff with others)
- at this point I don't know much about 'extensions' I might need, but I want to be prepared
I don't think I want to put together my own Linux box and run the site from here over the cable modem, but I can't rule that out either....

What do you call inexpensive?

As I said, I haven't researched it. I heard about deals $50-$100/y, don't know if they are cheap or inexpensive.

Jack, may be your first choice.I believe he has made the offer in the past. I pay about $17 a month but I'd like to see what you find. Prices are dropping and services are increasing.

Uwe, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend www.alwayswebhosting.com (http://www.alwayswebhosting.com)- just tell Ronnie that BajaTaco sent you. See if the stuff they offer is what you are looking for. Customer service has been really good (been with them for a long time now) and very reliable performance.
If you want inexpensive domain registration, go to www.namecheap.com (http://www.namecheap.com)

Uwe,
There are so many options out there these days that if I recommend one now, will be old news.
It seems that every two weeks someone is better on the survey.
Here are the ones I like:

http://www.godaddy.com/
We can talk about hosting a site for you if you are interested, but can't discuss here.
This seems a great deal!
NameCheap has started its own hosting service! Get same great customer support and reliability we give you now from your web host. Imagine hosting multiple domains, having plenty of transfer space and getting 24/7 customer support, all for just one low price starting at $3.95/month.

• $3.95/Month
• Multiple Domains
• GB's of Transfer
• Perl, CGI-BIN, MySQL, PHP

Jack, yes, things change fast in that business. So I'll look at the suggested providers when I get more time and am closer to actually getting started. It looks like there won't be time this year.</div>
So let's look at features. Are there any features that any of you think are must-have? Anything traps to look out for?</div>

- First you need to decide if you want to host your own server or not. Be prepared for some intense setup and upgrade work if you wish to host your servers.
- Find someone that don't charge you for data traffic.
- At least 10 mailboxes.
- As much space as you can on their disk included. 500 M ~ 1G.
- Support some kind of photo gallery software. And when you find some good, please let me know.
- Easy administration. This is personal. You need to try.
- Support to FrontPage if you want to use Microsoft tools.

One thing I will note is that alot of the super-cheap "bandwagon" hosts will go great guns for awhile, while the word spreads about what a great deal they have, and then they eventually get overwhelmed with new accounts, and can't keep up with customer service or technical quality. I would be very hesitant to sign a contract for 1 year service or something like that. Month-to-month is best in my opinion, so you are not stuck if they suck. That's what I like about the place I am using, they have weathered the growing pains very well, and have always given me good customer service, and I pay month-to-month through PayPal, so they do not have access to my card # or account info.

I agreed with Baja.
Reliability is important. Try to get someone that has been in business for a while.

Don't know if you're still looking for a domain host but I saw this offer today for free hosting for 3 years with 500MB of storage, 5GB per month bandwidth and a promise of no popups, ads or spam. I don't have any experience with 1and1, but it sure looks like a good deal.
Their info/ordering page is here:

I signed up with 1&1, let's see what happens and if I start creating a site....
When I researched 1&1 a little I found one comment regarding their techsupport:

Sounds about right for the price. At least they seem to have a sense of humor.

Just a head's up- if you want to create your own website to show your mods and trips for a really affordable price, the place that hosts my website is now offering 600mb of disk space and 25gb of bandwidth for $9.95 a month. http://www.alwayswebhosting.com/
so now I have more room for more pics- just in time! I have been with them for a couple of years now, and they are great. Talk to Ronnie and he will take care of you. Just tell him that Bajataco sent you.
For a good deal on domain registration, I am using www.namecheap.com (http://www.namecheap.com) - only $8.88 per year.
