View Full Version : Short xmas & new year trip

Looks like the shorter trip ideas have been dropped in the Christmas trip thread.
Is anyone still interested in something shorter, say from 12/26-27 to 1/3-4?
There was talk about Baja and southern AZ & Pinacate.
In Baja there is always 28N 113W that needs still to be visited. Getting a boat to try 27N 112W where we ended up on the beach.

I only have christmas eve, and christmas day off, then the 29th and 30th. If someones trip passed through southern Arizona on those days, I might be able to hook up with them for a short time.

Here's what I'm thinking.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif </div>
December 26th to 28th El Golfo, Sonora</div>
Maybe spend the night of the 25th in Yuma.</div>
Camping on the beach 26th and 27th. My plan is to drive all the roads in the area.</div>
May exit on the road to Rocky Point and take the smugglers road north into the Pinacate on Sunday. Should have time to take a peek at the roads around 32114.</div>
December 31 to January 4th Catavina, Baja</div>
December 31st New Years in Ensanada</div>
La Pinta Hotel Rooms $61.60</div>
The plan would be to make Catavina the base of operations. I want to locate some old sections of the dirt highway between El Rosario and Catavina. I would like to explore all the roads heading east from the highway to the Pacific. I would like to go Mission Santa Maria. I would like to ... Well, the list is pretty long and we won't even get close to doing it all in four days. I would expect to camp one or two nights near the Pacific. If it's too cold we might have to head for the Sea of Cortez. Weather conditions will dictate some of what we do.</div>
Those are my thoughts. Let's hear yours.</div>

What happened to the 12/29-30?
Do you know where to pick up the Smugglers Rd from the south? I'm assuming 1 of the 2 roads Dave & I saw from the north would be prime candidates for where it winds up.
Like your basic layout for Baja. I will camp at Rancho Santa Inez with my Airstream. I'm not crazy about camping on the Pacific, at that time of year especially. I've had that area on the back burner for years (Roads from Mex 1 to the Pacific).
The trip into Mission Santa Maria isn't going to get any better. In fact it seems like the both the area & ruins themselves have deteriorated over the years. My first trip in was around 10 years ago(+-).
If you haven't already guessed, count me in.

I like your plan Bob!
http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif It's modular, perfect for people who can only do one part.
http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gifIt's not as much driving as Copper C., my navigator rebelled on that due to all the driving.
Now for the Hotel we need to pre-plan, I'll have to run it all by the navigator/photographer http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

</div>Peggy, didn't want to loose you, I just thought the short trip options got lost in the xmas-Copper C adventure. As much as I want to go back to the CC it's just not practical with the time we have for the trip, for planning&preparing, etc. Now with this new modular trip approach we'll be part of some trip http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif

Hello,
Guess what?!. My long trip plan is not happening. The other family that would do this trip with us will stay home until the 26.
Do you have room for me in this trip?
I may even ask for a seat from you for my mother in law, or the dogs. Your choice. Huh, this did not sound good. I am not making any comparison here. I really love my mother in law.
She is a kind of coming and not coming for about 2 months now.

Hi Jack,</div>
I have an idea - I'll take your mother in law and Bob can sit with your dogs-at home! Just kidding. I'm still recouping from the bug that hit the morning after the 4X party. That means, Bob made this trip plan while I was knocked out on the couch. So we will have to wait to see what his plansare - including me. Sounds good so far. And now a big party at the hotel too.</div>
Sorry about the Copper Canyon - Alamos trip not turning out but I am gladyou will be joining the Baja trip.</div>

Fat Harveys and the Hacienda it is on the 25th. I don't know my arrival time yet but it will probably be close to the last trip. Peggy won't be joiningus for this part of the trip. I think I saw where the smugglers road took off to the north on our July trip. I at least saw a road that we'll try and see where it goes. I'm sure we'll find a way or have some stories to tell if we don't.
For the Catavina part:
I'll be posting some information soon on hotels for those that interested. Peggy call the hotel in La Paz today and they have plenty of rooms but we dont want to wait. We'll see if we can get some kind of deal so let us know who is interested in New Years Eve in Ensenada and who might be interested in staying at the La Pinta in Catavina. Santa Inez is a cheaper place to stay and you can camp there. Theyhave some basic rooms. Al can probably provide you some information on those. It's been a couple of years since I've been to Santa Inez. I've got some work to do on the logistics for this trip because it was just an idea this morning.

Hi everyone, we are back,.,. looks like Jack tried to lose us too,, just kidding.
I am tring to climb out of a drug induced coma from a cold as well.
Are you talking about two trips here? One to the Rocky point area around Christmas and another to Catavina around New Years? Let us know when you firm up the itenerary as we would like to come along.

Welcome Captain Steve</div>
Yes there are two different trips or those with time can probably turn them into one trip. Might even be able to get to the hot springs at Guadalupe Canyon or spend a night or two at Mike's Sky Ranch while I'm off at work.</div>
I've posted different threads for both parts of trip. Your welcome for any part of either or all of both.</div>
The trip schedules are as firm as them are going to get.</div>

Hey,
Who will be able to do what?
I propose we describe this trip in parts. Some people may stay for the entire trip, like us.
ex:
Part I
Part II - During Bob's break for work.
Part III
Bob can you help us by providing a summary of your postings as Part(s) I, II, III?
If you make a new posting with the description, proposed route / general area, dates, hotel /camping, you can go back to the same main posting and edit it with the latests details when needed.
Also, how can we help? Moral support I mean, since my experience in Baja is very limited and I will be working until the 24.
Thanks,
-JACK
edited - Bob, I changed the title of your posting to reflect the Part I to III deal. I hope yo don't mind.

[quote]Potty yes.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/yeah.gifShower is for midgets, it's sponge bath only for us big guys.
[quote]I don't remember much about the facilities at Rancho Santa Inez, it's been a few years,& has changed hands I think. They weren't great the last time I was there, toilet, sink etc.(I don't remember a shower). The room accomodations also were not good. I wouldn't stay in them. It's camping (tent, RV, open air) or nothing for me at Rancho Santa Inez. The restuarant used to serve good food, but that's been awhile. The La Pinta is too close-by not to use some of their facilities if camping at the Rancho.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

Since we are talking about potty,
Just bought some gear to make camping with the family easier. Guess what is part of the gear list?
Besides what you guessed correctly, I got one of those portable beds (cot) that you assembly on the fly. I will play with one first at home then if it works OK I will order some for the family. The air beds are loosing pressure in a couple of hours. I don't want to try to fix them so they can go flat again.

If you take cots you may need a trailer too....
For the xtra seat you have to let the group know. We, for example, normally don't have an extra seat. I would have to install it, which only takes a few minutes.
