I know we talked about this once before (don't see the thread, plus it is time for a update from new members and those who have done some work).

OK, here is the deal. I have a fully cured 40' X 20' slab of concrete that I want to coat with something to make it easier to clean, and keep oil from soaking in. Colors are a issue, as the HOA won't let me do anything too crazy with colors. I need something that will put up with lots of abuse (welding, cutting, dropping stuff, and generally abusing it). I know there are very few flooring systems out there that will be indestructable (those that are, run $7+ per sq/ft).http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif

So, I am thinking about something simple like a good two part epoxy paint that I can put down myself. Anyone have experience with this stuff on floors? Anyone used anything else that works well?

We used something similar to what you're describing when we remodeled the shop at J &amp; L. It was a very hard finish that held up well. I don't remember the name, but can call or email my old boss to see if he remembers. I believe it was close to battleship grey in color. I'm not sure on the cost either, but can check on that too if you'd like.</div>

Damn civilians (http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/joker1.gif ) There are 2 "colors" used on ships. Haze grey, and Deck Grey. Haze grey is the lighter of the two, and is the color used on the sides of the ship. Deck grey is much darker, and is used on, you guessed it, the decks. When you are looking at a ship from the side, the haze grey will blend into the generally hazy horizon better than the deck grey. While the deck grey will blend in better to the water when viewed from above (like flying over in a plane). There are of course a few exceptions (white used on topside ammo lockers, black is used on anything above the level of the stacks, etc). </div>
Deck grey is a much nicer color, but is kinda dark for a garage.</div>

Jack, yes, I got the house. And thanks go a cool group of people (including Rockcrawler and Wolfsoul from this board, plus 5 others from zr2.com), we got all my crap moved in about 4 hours!!! The fastest move I have ever done.

The house is, well, it isnew house (just finished last friday), and in need of lots of decorating and landscaping. Now, I am off to decorate and landscape.

On second thought, I'm gonna go to sleep instead. I just got home from work, and go back in a few hours to pull another 12. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/sleeping.gif

From my research, the paints holds up as good as the prep work you do. I Know a few guys who have done this.

I think its about $100 per 200sq'

Congrates on the house.

By-the-way, the REALLY good shop floor stuff is about $15 sq'

Goodtimes,

FYI

In Arizona, some of the less expensive epoxy's fail because of 'hot tire pick-up'. This is not an issue in most of the country, but when it is 115 outside and your tires are running 145 degrees and you pull into your garage, the epoxy will delaminate from the concrete after you pull in and park. When you back out the next morning the floor under your tires will come with you...

Here is an intersesting 'tile' flooring. I have no exp. with it, but it looks interesting... http://www.racedeck.com/shop.htm

Thanks for the info. I have heard about "hot tire pickup", and have recently looked at racedecks stuff. The problem with it (and other tile &amp;/or matt applications) is that it will not stand up to weld splatter, something my floor will need to do. So I am after something non-flammable/non-meltable.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Steve, the really good stuff is really only about $7.00/ft. I took bids from several companies when Iset upthe TRW plant in Carson.I wasgoing to get the 17,000 sq/ft productionarea done for ~$115K, until we did the moisture vapor test (too high). We used the same stuff in the old building that we moved out of. It was pretty much indestructable, even with heavy forklift traffic in a cast iron plant (about the worst enviroment you can get for flooring systems). It certainly wasn't the prettiest, but it sure held up great! (even with me abusing it! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/devil.gif ).

So I am going to try the home depot stuff. $54 to cover 250 sq/ft. 2-part epoxy, takes 7 days to cure. So, $200 later, I have all the stuff to do it, and the 1/2 of the floor is prepped. I am doing a moisture vapor test on the other 1/2 before I put it down. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/yeah.gif

Since my workshop is slighty smaller than 17000 sq' maybe I wasn't getting that price break. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif </div>

Can't see much extra room for toys, the go-cart track would be a real space hog. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif

Funny you should mention the go-cart track. When they first put the flooring system down in our old Harbor City building, they were talking about moving the manufacturing out of there when we out-grew the place, and using it for a indoor go cart track. That was one of the considerations when they decided on that particular floor.

Ok, I finished laying the epoxy yesterday evening.

The floor looks good, but I am not sure about the long term durability of it when I start beating it up. Only time will tell. Hopefully I won't end up having a contractor come in and sandblast the stuff off, then putting down a different coating.

The epoxy went down well, and was easy to work with, but it would have been better with 2 people. After every 5 x 5' section, I had to stop and spread the paint chips out. This made it pretty much impossible to keep a wet edge to start with, so there are going to be some faint lines where the sheen is different. If I had a second person, I could have kept rolling the paint on while the other person spread the chips.
Also, I would not recommend doing the garage in parts. I did 1/2 of mine, then when it cured, I did the other 1/2 (because I didn't have any place to put my tools while it was curing if I did it all at one shot). What happened is that I was a little more generous with the paint chips on the second half than I was on the first. Also, don't do it late in the afternoon, unless you have lots of lighting in your garage. I ended up with a small spot with a very thin coating on it (bare concrete shows through), because I finished up after sunset last night, and couldn't see it.

No pics yet. I am waiting on the last 1/2 to cure (takes 7 days to fully cure) so I can organize my junk, then I will add pics. I will say this though. It looks alot better than it did before, and the oil isn't going to soak into the concrete, plus it cleans up very easy compared to bare concrete. The real test comes in a couple months when I get the wiring pulled, tube bender bought, and start making stuff.

I got to actually use my garage for the first time today. Lots of catch up work on the jeep (fluid changes, body and trim adjustments, corrosion control, etc). Very nice to have a place to do the work again.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif </div>
