Let talk about vehicle theft. Since we have alot of work into our trucks, I'm sure loosing them would hurt.

I know there are a bunch of elec. gurus around here and hence this info is useless. But maybe some one needs this.

http://www.the12volt.com/relays/page2.asp#psk

Here is a site with some useful info., even if you can't (or don't feel comfortable) doingthis, you can enlist my help and we can make a few changes to your rig. This will not stop your pro, but your basic joy-rideror fast grab typeswill most likely leave your rig where it parked. I know, a device like this saved my truck once.

Just an FYI of what can be done.

Ha Ha I dodged Jack on this one, went with drawings.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif

Am I being to hard on you, or you are just hitting me today?

Thanks for sharing the information with me. I keep thinking about it. That is a nice site.

If the truck is gone, the insurance will pay yo for a plain replacement. Besides all the parts, the labor and love is priceless.

Steve, I have given this some thought now that I live a little closer to mexico. I hear plenty of stories about stolen cars out here. Since I drive most of the summer with the top and doors off of my jeep, I figured it wasn't a good thing to not have some security of some sort.

So, I thought about a alarm. They are worthless, they do nothing but annoy people. When you hear a alarm go off, do you run out side to see what is going on, or do you just go to the other room and turn the music up so you don't hear it? Yea, I turn the music up too.

Next was a starter kill switch. It will keep the rookies from driving away with your rig....after they smashed the window to get in, broke the steering column and ripped out the key switch in a attempt to unlock the steering wheel and start your truck.

Next was a little more basic. "The Club". Kinda hard to steer with those things on. Easily visible, so the typical thief will {hopefully} go for something easier to steal. I have had to remove "clubs" from cars before (in a legal manner--someone at work lost his keys). They are a pain in the butt to get off even with power tools.

Well, I ended up using a club in combination with the factory installed "sentry-key" (jeep doesn't run unless one of my keys is within a few inches of the ignition) [this is verified through the use of a chip in the key].

It is not fool proof. But what it does is make the jeep appear to be a pain in the thief's butt to steal. So hopefully they will go steal someone elses car instead of mine. Of course I also keep everything out of the jeep when possible (stereo faceplate, sunglasses, etc) so there is nothing there to draw attention to the jeep.

I think the best thing to do is make your vehicle look unappealing to a thief, then add a couple of simple, pain in the butt to defeat (but easy to bypass if you need to), security devices. Obviously what I use won't work for everyone, but lets not forget the most simple of devices (like the club).

So what does everyone else use?

So what does everyone else use?I pretty much use the same philosophy: I have the club and keep the car unappealing, that includes not washing it too often http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif and have no valuables in the open. As you say, the pro's can not be kept from stealing cars and if it gets more difficult for them they will not even worry about opening the car on site, but take the whole thing. This, I hear, is polular in eastern Europe where the thiefs drive up in a tow truck... The chip keys have been very effective in Europe, car theft was a huge problem after the fall of the wall untill they chip keys came in. I don't know how things are these days over there.

I think we deal with 2 types of criminals: the ones that want stuff from inside the car and the ones that want the car. The former probably usually don't have a plan, they go around and look for easy targets and valuables in a car. I observed this type onces in front of an appartment where we were living: One guy drove the get away car along the line of cars while the other guy walked past the cars and checked for stuff using a flash light. I called the police right away, they came within minutes, very quite cruiser, no lights, but were too late. Hiding stuff may keep this kind of thief away.

The car thiefs are harder to deal with, I think, because they might be more organized and have plans. One way of protectionmight be to drive some make/model that's not too popular, i.e smaller market for car or the parts.

How effective would that kill switch be against the car thiefs? I wouldn't mind having some protection in addition to the club.

I really like the Club. It's highlyvisible. The streering wheel on my truck is the weak link there. I also see this Club type device that locks the brake pedal, but again easy to defeat for anyone willing to drive without brakes. I thinkI may get one of these anyway.

I have wonder how useful a device that would lock our trucks into 4lo. Or maybe 4 wheel brake-lock. What you guys think?

IMO a blinking red light on the dash is as good as an alarm 99% of the time. the other 1% the guy next store to me will call the police if my alarm goes off or I call the police if I hear it at a motel.

Alarm and starter kill switch, can be defeated about as fast as a opening your hood.

I'm thinking along the lines of multi-level anti-thief devices, just to wear them out (hence eat up time for them and send them away).

I would love to have one of those key/chip set-ups, but my truck didn't come with it.

I was thinking when I posted this was we could talk about car theft before one of ours gets stolen. I would be even more bummed if my truck went and I didn't know about some simple little tip, you guys knew. OR if I didn't post this and yours was gone, I may not like you guys, but you do have NICE rigs.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Good point (most of it)!

I wonder though, what makes you worry about security all of a sudden, there was this notebook discussion also.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif

About those key-chip setups. How exactly does the chip tie in? I mean will the car's computer disable the vehicle completely until the correct chip is there? This could be a problem if you are out on some remote trail or down in Mexico somewhere and the key takes it's own trip...

</div>

I can only discuss the theory, not how it actually happens, because theory is all I understand about it.</div>
Basically, when you send a signal to the PCM to start the engine, the PCM has a sub-routine which calls for a device in the steering column to send a weak signal to the "chip" in the key. The chip, when it recieves this signal, sends a reply. If the PCM doesn't recieve the reply within 2 seconds, it shuts the engine off. So, you can only drive for 2 seconds at a time without the key.</div>
Downfalls to this system are:</div>
1: new keys must be made at the dealer, and are specific to your vehicle (one jeep key will not send the right signal for another jeep)</div>
2: If you lose your keys, you can't hotwire thejeep to drive back to civilization.</div>
3: If either the key, or the signalling device fail, you cannot drive back to civilization.</div>
I may, at some point, wire in a bypass switch to this system, and hide it in a difficult to reach location (underneath a dash panel, or someplace similar which requires both knowledge of the switch location and tools to gain access to it) in case either #2 or #3 happen.</div>

I also do what Uwe does.....or doesn't do....which is wash the jeep very often. But that is because as soon as I wash it, I go hit the trails again, so it isn't very practical for me to try and keep it clean.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif </div>

This is something more for Goodtimes than the rest of you.... damn taco people! :) It will work on your vehicles as well, but works especially well for Jeeps. Anyway, I have a combination hood lock/kill switch. Keeps people from getting under my Jeep's hood and of course has a starter kill as well. I know nothing I do is going to keep the Jeep from being stolen if someone really wants it, but it should defeat most joy riders. Besides... you have to have a pretty devoted thief to drive anywhere in a lifted/locked CJ! :)

I thought about a hood lock, but at this point, (with the club and the sentry-key whoo-ya), they are already into some time/work to get the jeep. They would pretty much need either a serious wiring job and power tools in order to drive it off, or they would need to put it up on a trailer and tow it. If they are towing it, not much will stop them. But, just to make their lives even more difficult in case they should want to tow it, I crank the steering wheel one way or another before I put the club on, that way if they do push/pull/whatever it onto a trailer, it is even more difficult for them. I'm just a mean SOB like that sometimes.

In about 97 someone tried to steal our K-Blazer, after inflicting $600 worth of damage they gave up. But with the added $3 relay theywere less than a second of starting and driving away a good vehicle. No-way even with complete insurance coverage would Ihave not been able to replace the truck for $600.
[quote]
[quote]So I'm a big fan of these devices, plus if you build them and add them, you know how to by-pass them if you have trouble with it.
[quote]
I like the idea of an inexpensive way to add to the protection. I actually think that it might be even more important to protect an older vehicle you know well and that is in good shape:How much is the insurance going to pay for it in case of theft and how much does it cost to replace it with an 'equal' one?

Note: I managed to mess up Steve's original post, most of it is preserved in the quote above....Jack gave me some new Moderator icons and I hadn't noticed it...klicked the wrong button...Sorry
