View Full Version : Pick-up with shell FYI
Afew days back, 4RDave and I where doing some basic Taco mods.
He has the shell with the Standard 4 J-type hold downs. As some knowToyota uses thin metal ( I can't wait the the flames from the Toyota contigent herehttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/devil.gifhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/devil.gif which can fail with the stress of the standard J-clips to the bed mount. We did a recon at the local shell shop and foundout they make a J-clip that is about 2" wide instead if the 1/4" thatis stock with most shells. I think a full setof 6 (which SnugTop uses) was $5. I didn't buy a set for mine, but we did get a setfor Dave and got one installed. This is a nice, clean, cheap, upgrade anyone with a shell might want to look into, I know I'm going too.
Later Guys
PS Jack, I know, a picture would be nice and worth a 1000 words, http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif but I don't think we need a picture posted. The shell guys know what I mean and the others don't need this. Maybe if some of the truck guys want to see this, I'll email a pic http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/camera_flash.gif once I buy a set.

I am definitely interested in this. I am thinking about ordering a SnugTop tomorrow. I need to understand what you mean by 1/4" wide and 2" wide. Do you mean the clamping surface for the top of the clamp is 2" wide? Will the SnugTop dealer automatically give these to me if I get a SnugTop, or will I need to request/confirm that I will get them?</div>
Thanks - good timing.</div>

Go out and look at you current clamps on your shell, are they about 1/4" to 1/2" wide, where they clamp under the bed rail? The new clamp is about 8 to 10 times wider at that point. Maybe Dave will chime-in here and he can snap a pic.</div>
I guess I need to just lurk around here unless I plan to post pictures http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/confused.gif Jack's right again. I was going to post a write-up about tire sealer today, but may forgo this do to lack of Picshttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif </div>
After checking theSnugTop site and they don't mention it, so I don't think it's what they use. It may be some aftermarket clamp. Which I'd guess means you would have to add this, either the dealer would have it or you need to do it. At this point I don't know. I didn'tthink to ask. </div>
I would think these are 100% what you want, go see what your dealer offers.Besides I don't know for sure these will work with the SnugTop, it worked with Dave's shell(I forgetwhat he has, a Legend or something) but his is a different design than my shell. Since the Snug Top has 6 clamps, maybe it not an issue, but for the $ I think its a good idea.</div>
SIDENOTE: Iunderstand SnugTop has (or is coming out with) a new shell that is about $400 less than the current Cab-Hi shell. Build the same, but using cheaper hardware and windows. You know about this Chris?</div>
OK, I off to reply to Jack and wait to get beat-up about the picture thing.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gifhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif </div>
Baja, I can always send you a set if worse comes to worse, maybe I'll just bring a set next weekend if you want me to. My saving grace, see them in person, not just some stinking picture.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif

I was thinking this was a slam-dunk, no pics needed for this.
I was mistaken. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/chairfall.gif I always wondered what this feels like.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif

Steve, your too much! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif
Chris, anything you can do to spread that clamping force out over a larger area is good. The clamps are super cheap, so that may be the way to go. But if for some reason you cannot get them, you can achieve very similar results with something as simple as a small piece of metal (say, 3/16" thick....) between the clamp and the underside of your bed rail. Heck, even a piece of hardwood would probably work (would need to be thick enough that it doesn't break under the pressure). But if you can get the clamps for $5....why waste your valuable exploring time?
