Well, it was a long summer, with ourBig Dog Jessie and all of her problems. She got through it well, with special diet, vitamins, herbs, and a short walk every other day when she was up to it. The last two weeks however, it was apparent there was more than the degenerative spinal disease going on in her hind legs. She lost use of her right front leg, and had days she could hardly get up. The last two days, she was more like herself, and I barely had to help her up and down our steep patio steps., she could manage pretty well by herself. But we still had to know what was going on with her and why things were obviously changing. We took her to the vet this morning, and they showed us x-rays of that front leg ridden with bone cancer. She would not live much longer, and it would be quite painful, so we put her to rest., we did not want her to suffer.
Jessie was 14 years old, my first trail dog, and got to do things with her buddy Poor Little Jake, that most dogs never get to, including riding on the little Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad train. It's pretty somber around our house right now, and we're trying to give our attentions to Jake and Sadie so they don't get depressed. Once I'm up to it, I plan to write a tribute to her and put pictures on my website. Many of our friends and regular eco4wdtravelers got to know Jessie well. Sometime in the future we will take Jessie's ashes to one of her favorite spots on one of the trails she loved to go on with us.
