We are back from another great trip, it couldn't have been better if we would have done any of the thingsthe way we had themplanned. But then, planning ahead of time and Brazilian are mutually exclusive... Details and pics will trickle in, it'll include:
- excitement under Jack's hood
- the Hwy 95 incident

Well, I don't have any pics to add, but I did go up this morning after work and meet up with everyone that is still here.</div>
The day went well, albiet slow. It was 9:00 before I got to the staging area, and 9:45 before I caught up with the group on Upper Woodpecker (trail). We gave the trail hell, and I think I can safely say we came out on top, with only very minor vehicle damage, and a fair amount of trash. We all had a great time, but since I had already been up for over 24 hours, I came home to get some sleep.</div>
I'll be back out there on Friday to run Martinez Canyon (whole loop), and again on Saturday for the Sibly Mansion run. Lookin' forward to meeting up with those who are heading out again this weekend!</div>http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif

Since I don't know when I get to write something and put all the pics together here is one (http://members.cox.net/go4x4/desoto-jack3-1.jpg) when Jack was 'off' on Saturday.
Why to get a slider and not a pretty nerf bar (http://members.cox.net/go4x4/desoto-6)...

Jack is not off today.
He is at work. Planning all the tasks until the end of the year http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif Oh!
Uwe, the reason we had you in the trip was to get the http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/camera_flash.gif to share with us.
Please do your part of the game. If not,http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif, well I don't know what to do with you.

GoodTimes,
I don't recall John. Was he in the run with Baja?
I learned a couple of things in this trip.
1 - my battery temporary setup needs to get the permanent solution. I forgot about it.
2 - the airbags for coil suspension don't work off-road.
3 -my downey back coil are getting too soft. Need new ones. Old Man seems the best option.
4 - need to move the ARB compressor to a location I can work on the airtank easier.
5 - leaving the plastic flaceplate holder in the carunder thesun makes it bad. It broke in the trail. Take a friend with you to hold the radio in place.
I am already working on some mods for a low budget. Stay tuned and don't tell Georgia.
-JACK
p.s. My official radio-face holder (a.k.a. Uwe) will not be with me all the time. so I guess I need to fix that if I want to use the CB again.

Please make sure Uwe get his immigration paperwork with him. We almost got in trouble this weekend. If it was not for my sweet talk we would be in trouble. Uwe did not have his required paper work. And we all know that he looks very suspicious just like me.
http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif What a distortion of the truth!! Let me tell you about the Hwy 95 incident and what really happened:
We were driving down a very dark Hwy 95, Jack at the wheel, when we came upon 'Be prepared to Stop' and 'Federal Officers' signs. As we pulled up to the well light check point we saw that it was the Border Patrol. The officers asked if we were citizens and we answered truthfully with a 'No'. Of course he then wanted to see some immigration paper work, in our case that would be the Green Card. While I got out and showed mine Jack was fumbling with his wallet all the time mumbling incomprehensible stuff, finally he told the officer that he forgot to bring his!!! The officers asked where he was from and when Jack said Brazil the officer switched to Portugese. Luckily Jack understood and could reply in Portugese. The officer switched back to English and asked what we were up to we told him and he wished us a nice weekend, but not before warning Jack http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/nono.gif to always carry his Green Card. As we were about to pull out of the check point the officer came back, but this time he had questions about the mods to the 4Runner, this part of the interrogation took another 5 minutes. This incident could have ruined our weekend, well Jack's, cause the 4Runner and I could have still gone http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif
Here is another interesting fact. I was on the wheel when we hit another check point on the way back from AZ. We stopped, I opened the window, the officer looked in and said 'Have a nice day, Sir' and we were off...
So, if you believe Jack's story ask YukonBob how I get waved through Border Patrol check points. As we got back from Baja earlier this year we came to a check point just north of the border where they stopped the Yukon, but waved me through http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif
Driving I-8 and the highways in the souther AZ, NM, CA, there are a lot of encounters with the Border Patrol, it's rare however that they want to see identification. When you travel with a suspicious looking alien driver be prepared to identify yourself and for a little interrogation! When you travel with a respectable looking alien driver don't worry, continue with your nap.

http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/baja_rofl.gif Oh man, you guys crack me up.
GREAT PICS!! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/camera_flash.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/ok-kewl.gif Thanks for posting them!
I had so much fun, I wish I could just do 4wdtrips all of the time! Jack and Uwe are great company for the road. And it was really great to finally meet Scott and Doron (and Doron's daughter, Abbey) in person. These guys are great!
Jack and Uwe showed up a little late on Friday night (Brazilian style). We promptly went to the brew-pub for some food and Hefeweizen (Jack had some other kind of brew - nut brown?). We got some sleep and then began work on Jack's ARB compressor at dawn. We finally got it fixed and rolled out towards Mayer - the meeting spot for the trail run. We had to have a kind of brazilian breakfast on the run. Next thing we knew, we were in a creek bed doing the creepy crawly through the rocks. WOOOHOOO!! It was good and spicy. Then we climbed up into the hills for some fun off-camber and steep stuff. That trail took all day.
We stopped in Phoenix for food and then headed to camp. I was surprised to find the camp was barely occupied and only 2 people (Scott and Doron) were awake at 10:00 with the fire all gone- just embers. Wemade our introductions andhad lots to talk about. I was happy to crawl into a comfy bed and drift off to sleep. The coyotes sounded a wonderful chorus in the night and early in the morning. Scott took us on a nice tour of the area on Sunday. He mentioned things and pointed out things that I didn't know about and I have been through the area many times before. We had a relaxing Sunday with lots of time to just BS and enjoy the weather and scenery.
Here are a few pics...

Jack on a steep climb (http://www.bajataco.com/zafari03/z03-02.jpg) - notice the ledge to get over at the top. I was pretty impressed when he had to stop (twice! http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif ) under the ledge due to not getting lined up just right, and still finessed the 4runner over the top with some fine clutch work. Nice job Jack.

Hello,
Just to add to Uwe's, kind of correct version of the driving. Before the check point, we have just talked about the need to have the green card with us. I told Uwe that on my 10+ years in the US, nobody asked me for my paperwork. I guess I could have just stayed quite. Imagine my face looking at Uwe when the officer asked for my green card ... http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/eyes.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/blush.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/notme.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/sleeping.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/banghead.gif
