Okay, I better get a post started here...

I'll try to use this first post in this thread for updates, so post your comments and I'll update this post.

10/23/03

Date: Nov 22/23

Where: WhiteThaiGer den

What:

Saturday afternoon hang out, talk, look at pictures, have good food including a Brazilian* BBQ;
mod show-n-tell
trails?

What else?

What to bring: campfire/party stories, pictures (paper, digital, slides, video, etc.)

*'Brazilian', has 2 meanings here(1) using brazilian recepies; (2) a Brazilian will prepare the BBQ, i.e., he may arrive late, then decide he needs to go to the store and get some more supplies.... http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif No worries though, it will all turn out good and there will be other good food while we wait

It would bea day trip, but at least something http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gifAnza Borregois always close from here. There aresupposed to be trails in the mountains around Alpine andLakeMorena. Then there is Los Coyotes, where I've never gone, forgot all about that, would that work for Sunday? Some of you know trails there, right?

Los Coyote used to have a day use fee, which I think is $12.00 per vehicle, & yes there are some good trails there.

In the Buckman Spring Rd. area off of I-8, is Bear Valley Rd. & Los Pinos Trail, which would take 4-5 hrs plus getting there & back.

Cleveland National Forest has been closed for recreational use until further notice. That leaves a couple of options for our Sunday run. I checked with the Los Coyotes reservation & they are open. There is a day use fee of $10.00 per vehicle. Or we could head for the desert & do say Painted Gorge (this is a nice 2hr run, did it a couple of weeks ago) which is between Ocotillo & Plaster City or some other areas.

So I vote we save this, for a weekend trip.

Bummer about closing CNF, but I can understand. For us (A & me)heading down around Plaster City is way out of the way, BUT do-able. I'd even like to explore around the Valley of the Moon, but that is a looonnng drive home on a Sunday night. Sounds like a GREAT two day trip http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif

I agree, it is a better 2 day trip, the camping fee is $12.oo per vehicle per night instead of the $10.00 per vehicle day use.

I'd even like to explore around the Valley of the Moon, but that is a looonnng drive home on a Sunday night.

Are you referring to the area justeast of Jacumba at the top of the grade? If so, there aren't many roads thru there, it's a great hiking area though.

I'm going to check out the Otay Truck Trail this weekend to see if it will be an option, it should be open, it is west of the Otay fire area, south of the Cedar fire area & on BLM land.

I know there is hiking and rockclimbing in the area, but not sure about roads. I've seen pictures and it looks like a neat area. I was thinking I had hear about roads farther east, around the bottom of the grade.
Otay Truck Trail, sounds good, I don't think I've heard of that one.

Sharon and I have to head home to AZ on Sunday, so I am not sure if we will make any 4wd trails with you all - it will probably depend on location and duration. If it is something we can do on the way home (like painted gorge) then we could probably make it, but otherwise, we might just bring the little Toyota and save some gas $$.

Another option I checked out yesterday is Rodriquez Canyon/Chariot Canyon out of Mason Valley off of S2. It's about 1-1 1/2 hrs east of Vista out 78. It takes about 1 1/2-2 hrs to run, & comes out on 78 at the Banner store. Folks going east can continue out 78 to 86, those going west & north can go 78 to 79 etc.

We are probably going to concentrate most of our efforts on going to the beach and eating sushi. Anything beyond that is incidental... http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/lol.gif ... I heard there was a 4wd party or something.. I dunno...

If someone decides on a run for Sunday - be sure to post it. I need to know which vehicle to bring. I really don't want to give input on any runs because.. well... read the first sentence above http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif We may just have to go to the beach again on Sunday... I don't care if it is windy and cold.

Al is trying hard and has made many suggestions, we need some feed back now on who is interested, who long they want to go, etc.

Some areas suggested by Al:

- The mountains east of the burned area, Rodriquez Canyon/Chariot Canyon

-Painted Gorge

- Los Coyotes reservation ($10)

I have not been to any of the above, I have done some road around Banner, so maybe I drove in part of the mountains mentioned above.

We'll go on any of the above.

Your fellows from German may remove your citizenship.

Any of the above is good for me.
I vote more for the scenic option

Let's simplify this. It is supposed to rain Sunday. Rodriguez Canyon can't be done if it rains, a good portion of the run is in a wash. Los Coyote is also out if it rains, besides not wanting to pay a $10 day use fee for a half day run. I will take who ever is interested, & or can get away, to Rodriguez Canyon on Saturday.

Let's do Painted Gorge on Sunday. They are not expecting rain in the desert. Depart Vista around 9 am, arrive Painted Gorge 1030-11 am, back to Old Hwy 80 130-2 pm & depart for home. This drive will take us thru some of the Cedar fire burn area & the Pines fire recovery area from the 2002 fire.

Well, we get pretty exited about the rain down here. Don't get much of it, just had another period of 170+ days without measurable precipitation this summer. They all but close down the cities here when it rains. People are just not used to the drastic changes in the friction coeffient when the roads get wet. Of course the oil, rubber and stuff that accumulates on the roads over month makes for some slick surface. [/quote]

Rain?

He had a mini storm for San Diego level this night.

Guess what I found when leaving for work today?
The minivan had the driver window 100% open. Lets say it was a 'wash' inside. Georgia needs to drive with a tow.

One more reason to trade in the minivan. It does not close the window automatically when the driver forget to. I am sure that a nice TLC fully modified for 4WD would have closed the window for Georgia. The lift, bumpers, air compressor, ham radio, GPS, etc. would have taken care of that.

Now it wasn't entirly without fire. I'd like to think our subtle little fires helped and others may find these tips useful:

- put lit candles and oil lamps through out the house (including bathroom)
- if you have a fire place at least light one of those fire place logs
- if a BBQ is involved put Steve in charge of the lighting
