Yes, they may be as expansive as the Algodones dunes in the Imperial Valley.

I just got back from El Golfo to Puerto Penasco today! As my first real foray into Baja I was in awe!I have never seen such beauty and remote adventure in my life, and few places in my memory have left such an impression. Now, I cannot wait to go back! Next time with scuba gear, and a better rack for the Kayaks. The road along the train tracks through the Altar Desert was unreal, and plenty of challenge while pulling a trailer. I will post a trip report in the next few days.</div>
What an incredible place!</div>

Scott,

It seems very remote indeed. It makes me want to go too.
But now with our younger son, things got a bit more difficulty. My house boss, got much more conservative.

The pictures you posted are very nice.

I thought Uwe was talking about doing Kofa NWR? Are you confused?Yes, I want 2 separate trips. Haven't done any planning yet, but I still want to do the Thanksgiving trip.

I think Jack may not be able to do 3 November weekends plus the party weekend.
Now if I can take all those days off required for the November trips.... <keep-your-fingers-crossed emoticon goes here>

You are correct. I was trying to combine the trips. Or should I say, short-cut one.
I am still interested in the Thanksgiving trip once you define it. I even changed the 4Runner Header so it would sound more like a Toyota.

We will meet at the Hacienda Motel 2150 4th Ave Yuma, 928-782-4316, on Saturday 11/15/03 for an 8-9 am departure. Those who need Mex Ins can get it in San Luis, CA before we cross the border. Make sure every one has a picture ID & or passport. A tourist card or a vehicle permit will not be necessary for this trip. Bring plenty of drinking water, food & all camping gear. I will supply a 10'x20' shade tarp.

I've tried most everything I can think of to break free for this trip but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. I was really interested in the El Capitan and Lighthouse portion. I was thinking on Sunday I'd break off on the smugglers road and head north into the Pinicate and back home. Unfortunately, I only have one day and not two. I'm a definite no for the trip but don't be surprised if you see me at the Hacienda.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/confused.gif

Al, Mrs. Baja and myself are interested in doing this trip. Is there room left for us?

I am thinking about making a couple of variations from your schedule for our own purposes regarding our schedule.

1. I am thinking about crossing the border Friday night and camping out at El Golfo Friday night. We could then meet you when you get there on Saturday. This would afford us 2 nights of beach camping instead of one.

2. I am wondering if we would be able to continue on fromPuerto Penasco (instead of camping at the Pinicate with you)and get home Sunday night. We both need to work on Monday. I guess it depends on how late you think we will get to Puerto Penasco. It will probably take us about 7 hours to get home from there. How much drive-time do you think we will have between Sat. night beach camp location and PP?

Baja,

That works for me. We can meet in El Golfo Saturday am, or where your camping. I usually camp about 11 miles south of town. There is a road that comes down to the beach near a wash, & I camp about 1/2 mile south of there. That is the road that gives good access to the dunes, if we do that.

Drive time into PP Sunday should be 4-5 hrs. With an early enough start, that should give you enough time to fuel up & head home.

Looking forward to having you guys along.

The kayak was a 10.5 Dagger Blackwater. We had a 12.5 with us also. For potentially hostile photo environments I use the new Sony Cyber-shotU DSC-U60 Waterproof digital. It is a great (small) camera for digital shots. My 35mm EOS 3 can get bulky with 28-300mm lens, with more in the bag. I have really grown fond of the little digital, even though it goes against my pack everything and the kitchen sink philosophy http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smashfreakb.gif until the rear axle touches the bump stops http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/nono.gif .</div>

I'm back from the short version. Al and Dave should be resting comforably in the Pinacate tonight. I left them at 6:15 this morning.

I think I've found my new most favorite beach. Thirty-five miles of spectacular drivable beach. In that thirty-five miles there were a total of six small groups camping, including ours. The weather was picture perfect.

On my first trip, we went inland because Al hadnot donethat part. This trip we stayed on the beach because I had not done it. Al and I agree that once for the inland road is probably enough. We spent some time locating access from the beach to the inland road at all the major spots including the road to Puerto Penasco. I'd still like to map all the roads in the area so I'll be inland again but for pleasure I'll be on the beach. It's the kind of place I could plant myself for a while and a journey junkie doesn't say that too often.

I've posted five pictures, that don't do the place justice, on the forum, but I know you need to see something. They are eg1 to eg5 (http://www.rxtx.com:8085/4wdtrips/photogallery/details.php?image_id=904).
