Plans so far: Don't stay home.</div>
Going to the Mojave Preserve is almost a tradition for us.That's when we did you Mojave road pieces, still have to finish that one. What's the status on the forum trip on this one?</div>
Another option is southern AZ/KOFA. I tend to lean towards that one, it's something new.</div>

Ah, Thanksgiving! I will be spending it in style at Cerro Gordo once again. Nothing like sitting in the 1871 American Hotel and eating turkey and trimmings. And spending the rest of the weekend giving town tours to anyone who should happen up there.

You are probably the #1 customer / friend.
Is it too cold there already?

I haven't heard a weather report for Cerro Gordo - but imagine it is starting to cool down some. Hey, you know me - I'd move up there in an instant if given an opportunity. If you guys decide to go somewhere near there, like Death Valley, or Owens Valley, do stop in and say hi.

I'll be busy with work, but that should not keep me from planning. In fact, planning would give a nice change of pace and something to look forward to. Let's see what we can come up with and if we can get a little group together. We are open for any trip.

Would you go by yourself or with family, Jack?
There is not much interest in this one so far, maybe people are planning their other trips or are planning to spend the holiday with their turkeys http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif

Would go with the family. Unless they dump me one more time.

I am missing a trip big time and some camping.

Just to make sure I go the correct dates.
Thanksgiving is on 11/27, right?

If so, a trip would be from 11/27 to 11/30 then.
It is already in the Forum calendar.

Thanks Al, if you have some time... and you went to the area, so you may have some material. I am quite busy at work and on weekends lately and I don't see it slow down in November.

I usually end up collecting infos and plan where to head on the first day, then I plan day by day in the evenings. For a trip with more people it might be a good idea to have more of a plan. I'll need to learn how to run a more organized trip...

Uwe, will probably do what he did lately. No preparation.

He was working on fixing my ARB compressor just before the trip, fixing the microphone holder, etc. He could have done all of this earlier. ex: could have come to my house and worked on the 4Runner for me. But no, he likes to do things just before is really needed.
Did I tell you that we did not have time for breakfast because Mr. Plan was working on the 4Runner before breakfast?
We just can count on people doing the right plans anymore.
We may need SteveS to give some couching around here.

As Uwe says, "that is all that I will say".

I am still on, but I have had no time to do further planning. I think we should discuss stuff on Saturday when most of the interested parties are here. Until today there were only Jack, Al, and I, all of a sudden everyone else notices that something has to happen on this long weekend http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif . Since no plan is fixed and we are looking at south-western/central AZ maybe we can combine some things and meet Scott and/or Doron out there. There is talk about a little trip they are planning. Sounds like a jeep trip, so it could be something where we meet at a camp, but do separate driving.

Hey all!

The Smiley Rock trail is ok for any high clearance SUV. I will be using my Rover (most likely). It would be great to have all of you come out. I am sure Chris can elaborate further, and suggest a good camping area, as an overnighter would be fun. We could also run a trail on Sunday morning. Maybe Mingus mountain, etc.

These trails are in the area of Jerome, AZ; which is probably one of the coolest mining towns I have ever been to. It is almost totally original, and is a burgeoning area for artisans, etc.

If you guys want to come out Friday night, Saturday and Sunday I will plan the whole thing! Just let me know and its a done deal.

Friday (day) is a little bit of an issue for me, but I can be there in the late afternoon. We could have a base camp, and play from there.

Now this sounds fun...

Hey what happened with Thursday?
We want the whole thing...
Mr. Plan (A.K.A. Uwe) is drooping the ball here. He is spending too much time working.

Just had the oil changed, lub, and re-torqued the headers bolts (FYI they were just fine, nice Downey). Replaced the back coils and shocks last week, I am ready for the trip.
Well not really, they found a teared CV booth. I have scheduled the work for Monday. If no surprises show up I will be really ready.

Boy, just to replace a plastic/rubber cone cost so much. Darn engineer that couldn't make the change easier. So much work involved...
I hope (s)he has to do the same on this car too a couple time to feel the pain ($$).

Scott, lets Rock. Looking forward to some fun in Az. You and Uwe need to work the details, we will follow.
Camping, fire, good food, good company... Can't wait.

Sounds like we are getting a plan together here. I still would want to do the whole long weekend. On Thursday and Friday we could make our way from SoCal to the meeting point.</div>
On Sunday we have the restriction that some/most of us will have to go back to SoCal. So if we are around Jerome we should make our way back around noon in order to not get back home to late. </div>

Here is a rough itinerary: The only thing I am a little unsure of is the campground (Chris?) I will do some more research tonight, but we will basically be camping near Jerome/Cottonwood. I know some of you will be coming in early, so selecting a good spot might be better undertaken by those individuals. I will be arriving Friday afternoon.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
We will run the Saturday trails with John Shotts (He just signed on to the group) He has a very nice TLC 100, and is a fun guy to run with!.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Here is his plan for Saturday:</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
SATURDAY: MEET @ <st1:time Hour="9" Minute="30">9:30 AM, PULL OUT @ <st1:time Hour="10" Minute="0">10:00 AM</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Run 1: <st1:Street><st1:address>Pipeline Road, from West to East. Then exit via Greasy Spoon Loop. This is NOT just the Greasy Spoon Run some of you have done. It's a side trek down the <st1:Street><st1:address>Pipeline Road that offers the real challenges!. This run has some VERY steep grades in both directions (especially the return direction).A rear lockerhelps on thesteep climbs. I would guess if wet, the locker is a must (so check weather or bringa long strap. Hee hee!). Trip duration about 3hours total. Trip rating: Mostly a 2.5 - 3+. A few of thoseclimbs and descents ~3.5. Scenery on this run is amazing! Pic: "DSC00834" is from the Pipeline Trail Run.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Run 2:<st1:City><st1:place>Oak Creek <st1:City><st1:place>Homestead. This rundrops down to the <st1:City><st1:place>Oak Creek a few miles west of Sedona. Rated a 2.5 - 3 (though there is a optional 4.0 climb requiring locker(s)). The end at the creek is one of those camping spots you'll want to remember for your next camping trip. Duration on this one about 2hours. Pic: "DSC00349" is from Oak Creek Homestead".</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
OptionalRun 3 (time permitting): Pop over to the Palatki Ruins (easy forest road rated at 2) and see the petroglyphs and dwellings (free) before returning to Sedona or home. Pic: "DSC00186 is from Palatki Ruins".</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Sunday:</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Smiley Rock- This is a great little trail that I have always wanted to run. It has scenery and some challenges. It leaves from Jerome, and ends in <st1:City><st1:place>Prescott. It will only take a few hours (if that) and will put everyone on the highway by lunch.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
A that’s left is determining a camp spot and getting some feedback on my trail selections…</o:p></div>
So what does everyone think???</div>

Hi Scott

Most of us discussed this over the weekend, and the general consensus was that we should stick to the original plan of exploring the KOFA area (and possibly trying to get close to the Eagle Tail mtns). This is due to the fact that it is a much more reasonable drive for the CA folks, and because some of us will not be coming until Friday night (and some staying through Monday, some leaving Sunday). So with the offset schedules, and wanting to maximize our time off of the highway, we figured it was a good choice due to it's "central" location and the weather should be pretty outstanding.

However, now that we are back from the weekend, I see you have modified the itinerary somewhat to include some classic Sedona trails which means camping at lower elevations as well. As I was telling the group over the weekend, it really makes no difference to me - Jerome/Sedona is much more convenient to me, but is a much longer drive (about twice as far)for everyone else. I will let everyone get in here and speak up on their opinion/decision. Both areas are going to be absolutely beautiful and the weather should be really nice.

Tentative itinerary from the CA folks. Meet Wednesday evening at a motel in Blythe.

Thursday, do some roads in the NW Kofa area to include Palm Canyon Rd & the Kofa Queen Canyon Trail. Camping on the later.

Friday do the King Valley Rd, McPherson Pass Trail & the Big Eye Wash Trail. Returning to a Motel at Blythe.

Saturday after meeting Mrs & MrsS & 4XDave, head out thru the NE section of Kofa into the Little Horn Mtns into the Eagletail Mtns & camp.

I am glad everyone had such a nice time in <st1:City><st1:place>San Diego!http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif</div>
</o:p></div>
It would definitely be a long drive for the folks in CA to come play in Sedona, soI understand the desire to stick with the original plan. So, if anyone wants to come along in <st1:State><st1:place>Arizona, please let me know ASAP. I will still be playing in the Sedona area with the other group, so we can make changes as necessary. </o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
That <st1:place>Blyth area is very cool! Have any of you been to dripping springs? It is just east of Quartzite, AZ (about 20 min. from the river). It is a fun trail with some great petroglyphs too.</div>

Life is so much easier when you have your own ghost town to go to. We'll be thinking about you guys while we're sitting around the parlor stove in the 1871 American Hotel eating turkey, and pumpkin pie all weekend. Once in awhile we might leave our toasty quarters to give town tours to anybody that may happen up there. If we're lucky it will snow a little bit to add to the ambience, but not enough to ruin the road conditions coming in or out. They already had a foot of snow a few weekends ago, which is early for the Inyos, so should be interesting.

Welcome Shotts(s),

Good to have you on board. Now don't be shy and jump in the discussions.

Scott, it seems that we need to have two groups for the Thanksgiving trip, you guys don't have two meters radio yet, do you?. We could try to be in touch by repeaters.

It will not be this time for the all get together trip then. Just for you to know, we got this trip going before you proposed your route. Otherwise we would all make the same. We will have the Uwe's fancy drink and fondue (can we change your mind?)

How about we pick a repeater for this trip?
Can you consider sharing some information with the group?

Thanks,

We'll bring some cheese fondue. I guess we should have it Saturday night when most of the people are their. Maybe the people coming in on Saturday could bring some baguette or other French bread with a hard crust?!

Still need to find rum with at least 54Vol%! Anyone?

Jack, we were discussing via email about meat for barbeque - I would be happy to donate for this past weekend, but I would say don't bother worrying about doing the barbeque this weekend - I think you have enough to worry about since you are bringing the family.

Uwe, I will bring our 100% new fondue pot (made in Brazil) and fuel then.

I am not sure barbecue goes well with the cheese fondue. But. If the group want, I have a small charcoal barbecue. Need to know quick so I can plan how much longer I will be late to leave.

Any problem with fire in the area?
Talking about fire, SteveS do you have enough wood? I remember Dave is the wood man. Something todo with trimming trees.

It looks like the EagleTail Mtns. arepretty well surrounded with a wilderness boundary, so we should probably switch to the Little Horns and save the EagleTails for a backpack trip. How about the Castle Dome mtns? Anyone know about those? There is a road that goes over them according to the gazeteer, or maybe it's a foot trail - I don't know. Unfortunately, I don't have time for much planning at all - we'll just have to explore with no itinerary - nothing wrong with that http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yep, the Eagle Tail Mtn's have no roads, all the old roads in there are hiking trails now.

I think the Castle Dome mtns' are the area that Al suggested for day 2.

I also don't have time to plan, it'll by crazy time till we pull out here.... I'll make sure I'll have my DVD's with the AZ Topo's for Ozi set up, maybe find the sat pics. I doubt I have time to get the DQQ's.

One reason why I want to explore the area we are going are the pics here:

Here are some repeaters I found for La Paz county, don't know how up to date the info is:
146.850 - Parker
145.310 - Quartzsite (PL 162.2)
146.680 - Smith Peak (PL 162.2)

2m Freq: 4WDtrips 1
CB channel: 4 (actually everyone has 2m, right?)

Al, what's the when/where for Thursday morning? We'll be coming in late to Blythe and don't know where to stay yet.

Maybe we can email cell numbers around too.

Uwe,

We need to pick one repeater. Which one would you say is the closest to the area we will explore? If not, the one that is in the higher pick.

Once we lock on the repeater we will use, I will set 1/2 of my radio to monitor the repeater and 1/2 on 4WDTrips 1. That way if people call us I will be able to know. I can monitor two frequencies at once.
