Just wanted an excuse to use that line - http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Actually Roger & Marty & I are headed up on Friday for 12 days in Mammoth including our tour By God To Bodie - so yes, I am going there! And our Golden Leaves & Golden Trails the following weekend. We'll be spendng the days in between exploring lots of ghost towns and dirt roads, some new and some old to us. I will have my lap top and can come back each evening and give you updates on our days adventures if you are interested.

Can hardly wait to get on the road!http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif

You are LUCKY!

Have a blast and be safe. The laptop sounds cool if you have time - it would be neat to see some commentary.

This is our annual trip, can hardly wait, I'll be on the road in less than 24 hours! We usually have a week up there in June, also, but the tour that brings us to that area didn't attract anybody this year, so we went to Cerro Gordo instead.

In the evenings and on the one or two days we relax around the condo, I usually check for my e-mails and lurk around the message boards a little bit. I'll try to give you guys updates once in awhile, and maybe I'll even post a picture or two that Roger & Marty have taken with their fancy Nikon cameras.

Baja, Marty ordered a green taco but it didn't come in. They had a black one, so he figured what the heck and bought it instead. AFter all the driving around the pumice roads around Mono Lake you can't tell the difference between the black & the green any more. He just can never ever wash his new truck. Anyway, new blacktaco works great - just like his old green taco, except he owns this one - the other was a lease. I will have to take a picture of how Marty installed all of his radios - it works great so long as you don't have to have anyone sitting on the passenger side.

We spent today looking at 3 hours of video of everything we have done - the Bodie trip, Mono Lake, and the Big Ass Mine. And shopping the Mammoth outlet malls. I think tomorrow we are going to goand play around the Gold Crown Mine.

Oooooops...Roger's getting ready to serve one of his delicious meals here in the condo...got to gohttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/gottogo.gif

I think you may be thinking that I was suggesting the correct color was green http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif but we all know that a WHITE TOYOTA is the true ship of the desert http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/joker1.gif

I wish I could see the video! Yea, show us the radios! Take a pic!

Have fun http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif

White is the way to go.

I am sure that if they had white Tacomas last weekend my deal would have gone well. They had a green what was the wrong truck 4x2!!!!! and then a silver $900.00 more than the agreed price. NUTS!

You can thank 007 for that. Ever since he developed his patented super taco, the silver units became premium and the prices went through the roof. What a bunch of hype http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Bye God I went to Bodie and I did it in a Green Forerunner! Marty went to Bodie in a Black Taco, and David Wright did it in a White Taco. The other two couples that went along had Jeeps, and I don't remember what colorthey were So I say Forerunners, Tacomas, and Jeeps, rule no matter what color they are.

We had a fantastic trip. Explored nearly every day. Discovered some newmining places out there we aren't even sure what the names are, but will eventually find out. Lots of fall color in many of the places we went. The road to Aurora, Nevada from the Nevada side, not the Bodie sidewas the roughest we took, as the summer thunderstorms and flash floods must have hit that area pretty hard. We had two inexperienced people with us, so decided to take an easier route in. However it may be worth while to go back sometime and see how the people with experience and Toyotas and Jeeps do.

The Forest Service and the Mono Basin Historical Society are taking responsibility for the Big Ass Mine now. I'll be posting info on how we can make sure this important historical area is kept intact, on my website for October, and hope to get everyone's help in a letter writing campaign. Also hope tohave lots of pictures posted, and a story about the gunfighter of Aurora whose grave we saw outside of the older cemetery.

By the way, we weren'tabducted in Mono Mills that we remember, and there were no mysterious footprints along the Bodie Railway this time. At the Mono Basin HistoricalSociety Museum I was able to buy a Bodie railway tie, though! And Dunderberg Debbie was relieved to find that her cabin narrowly missed being destroyed by a nearby tree. Thank goodness that she wasn't there serving Frappuccinosat the bar whenthe tree fell, though. That would have been a frightening experience!

Oh, almost forgot, in Adobe Meadows near the remains of the River Springs Stage Coach Stop, we saw wild horses and antelope. That was a real treat! And wesaw a few deeron the way to Big Ass Mine that were smart enough to stayon a reserve up therewhere the hunters couldn'tshoot them.

Hi Cecile,

Nice description.
One day I will find a job to enable me to go to more trips. Better yet, I will manage to have my current company to give me more time.

I remember tracking which trips from eco4wd I did and what was missing. I have a couple with Roger still to do.

Thanks,
-JACK

Great report Cecile - thanks http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif I wish I could have been there with you all - sounds like one of those perfect trips. The gunfighter grave is really intriguing. And the tree - that's too bad. I think the best part (for me, would have been...) the wild horses and the antelope, and deer. That is awesome!!!!!!!!!

The wild horses are always in that area, but this is the first time they were out in the meadow where we could all get a good look a them. The antelope were incredible - the first time I've ever seen them! I looked outside my window and there they were, then they crossed right in front of us and moved a bit further away, but still close enough we were able to get them on video. Don't remember if Roger got them with his camera or not - he took 60-100 pictures each day we were out, and Marty did the same, so we have a lot of pictures to go through! Every evening when we got back to the condo we'd go through the pictures, and also watch our days adventure on video. It was like double the fun!

The gunfighter story was great fun. I put it together before we left, and read it to both of our tours. It was kind of eerie the second time I read it because I was reading it right over the gunfighters grave. Wonder what his ghost was thinking!

I'm going to put in another plug for the Log Cabin Mine/Big Ass Mine, here too. Steve, Al, Dave, Jack, you've been there, you know how pristine this area is! The forest service and historical society are now preparing to close all of the buildings and only allow viewing through plexiglass windows that will replace the glass ones. They are also telling everyone about the place, and it is seeing more vandalism every day, until they can get everything secure, and eventually a caretaker up there. We were asked to get the word out to encourage everyone to write letters to the historical society so they will continue efforts to keep this place intact. I'll have all this posted on my website with info on who you need to write. We cannot lose this historical place!

I just don't get why people will vandalize anything. It is going to work against themselves. It will be closed one day ...
It makes me sad.

Jack we have a real chance to save this - as I have said the Mono Basin Historical Society is planning on saving it, but they cannot do it alone. That's where we come in. I'll have this on the front page of my website soon - I've written it, Roger's preparing it right now - I'll start a new thread as soon as it is published to the site. I do believe we can make a difference!!!
