As soon we post comments here they will be old, but lets try some discussion.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
My Nikon is going bad. It almost time to get a new digital camera.</o:p></div>
In my opinion, you don't need more than 3M pixels. The camera needs to fit in your pocket, it needs optical zoom, it needs to support 512M or memory the better the optics the better the image.</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Can we talk a bit about digital cameras. Any direct connection to 4WD?</o:p></div>
Casio has some slim cameras ...</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>
Uwe, what did you get? What was your decision table?</o:p></div>
</o:p></div>

So I guess the NikonD100 that Roger & Marty each bought this year is a little bit too big and bulky and pricey, huh, Jackhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif

Jack, I use a old cannon powershot A-20. Not to bulky, uses compact flash cards (need more memory...just put in a new card when the old one is full), it is pretty cheap now, but it only has a 3X optical zoom.
It has put up with alot of abuse....lots of desert 4x4 trips, with lots of dust. It just keeps on going.
If you don't want to blow your pictures up too far, it works pretty well. It is a 2.1megapixel I believe. So up to about 8 x 10 (printed), the pictures look pretty good.
I have taken as many as 280 pictures with one set of good batteries. I could take more if I didn't always use the little color display thingie (tech term--in case 007 reads this) on the back.
It makes a good'4x4 trip' camara, because it is not too expensive, takes good pictures, and if you loose or damage it, you are not out as much $$$ as you would if you took along one of the newer fancy camaras.
But, if you want a camara that will let you take high res pictures, this isnt' the one for you, 1200 x 1600 is as big as you can get.
olllllllo <---- If you can read that, roll me over.

Price is soon forgotton, quality is not.
I have a Canon A70 3.1 mpix with a 512 CF card. Has multiple modes from fully automatic to fully manual ,multiple scenes, macro, panorama and optical and digital zoom. Optional lenses are available. Also takes pretty good video clips (AVI format) in 3 different pixel sizes. Uses 4 AA batteries and great battery life. I use rechargable NiMH batteries with a charger for the vehicle or home. Have seen some people indicate they are using up to 1Gig CompactFlash cards. You can also download the instruction manual on the Canon website. Included software is fairly basic. Using Adobe Photoshop Elements, OmniSticher and Panorama Factory software. Paid $299 at BestBuy and got a $50 gift card about 3 months ago.
Check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for a very good objective review site.
DpReview also has a good forum section.

Tom,
Thanks for the information.
I am surprised the others in the Forum are not jumping in the discussion. I believe that they all have digital cameras. Sure, they are probably getting old now.
Thatare two reviews toward Canon. I have a very nice 35 mm Canon. I loved it. But after using digital, the 35 mm has not been used for years.
I will check, the pointer you sent.
Just checked. GREAT SITE!
I guess you did good on the Canon. It got good reviews.
THANK YOU.

Ok I'll chime in.
Since I only snap pics for me, Iset my dc todo 1 megapixal pic. Not a clue as what model I have, its a fuji finepix with 6X optical zoom. Anita takes our good photo's, I just document.
Get something that uses AA batteies and use rechargeable's, for me batteries are thelimiter on dc's, I have a little rechager and two sets of rechargables, plus I carry exrta AAs for other gear anyway. But you already know this (and everything else and more than I know about a dc)
Mydc has a 128mb card ($30) and holds something like 500 pictures at 1 meg pix, since I fewsmaller cards and I can hold about 800 pictures (4-5 trips worth)
I like lots of zoom to move in on things, so thats what I looked for in a dc

Jack, I would probably vote for a Canon as well. I have a Minolta and it's a really nice camera, but I like the color processing on the Canons better. Next 4wd trip we do together, we should all take an identical photo of the same thing at the same time from the same place, to compare. I could shoot the Minolta, Steve or Anita could shoot the Fuji, and Brian, Cecileor Tom could shoot the Canon. If anyone else has a different one, chime in and let us know - Kodak and Nikonmaybe?
I have seen some really slim, compact units on the display shelves lately! All with optical zoom and 3.0 megapixel or better. I would love to get a more compact version for backpacking, but I like to use my AA rechargeable batteries.

I have a Nikon. It makes noise while moving the lenses, but still work.
It will be interesting comparing the pictures. No touchings after they are taken OK ...

We got the Canon A70 like MrTom. Also used the site he mentions for reviews.</div>
This camera is intended to be a little point and shoot for trip documentation, Srisuda will continue using here SLR equipment for the more serious stuff.</div>
Things I wanted:</div>
not too expensive (<$300)
3+ mega pix
AA batteries
3x zoom or better
small
common storage media
Srisuda wanted:</div>
full control in addition to the programs
The Canon gave us all that, or at least came reasonably close. The reviews I saw on the net were also all good. We now took our first 500 pics on the trip. We'll see how everthing came out.
The battery and storage media requirment already payed off, as we borrowed chips and rechargable batteries from family in Germany while over there.

I have been taking pictures for quite a few years, and I think that a good camera does not translate to good pictures. 100% of the digital images on my website were taken with a 2mp Sony waterproof camera with a FIXED http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif focal length lens (zoom).
Here are the keys to good pictures (in this order IMO).
1. Composition
2. Lighting
3. Filters (or photoshop)
4. Optics (F stop/aperture and glass quality/coatings)
5. Resolution (anything over 3-6mp is overkill, unless you are going to print 16x30" posters)
6. Exposure control
7. Focal length
These are the cameras Stephanie and I use:
35mm: (remember, you have to get over 6.3mp to match 35mm film at 100 ISO)
Canon EOS 3 (http://www.usa.canon.com/html/cameras_slr/eos3.html) with eye focus, and 7 frames per second
Canon Rebel 2000
17-35mm lens
28-200mm lens
28-300mm lens
200-400mm lens
1.5x Doubler
Full dark room with Bessler enlarger and tanks
Digital:
Sony Cyber-shot U DSC-U60 (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=zuxIwg1W5YdI3U0TUaBCyUJaiZeeV3Tly2o=?Pro ductSKU=DSCU60KITIS&Dept=dcc&CategoryName=dcc_DIDi gitalCameras_CybershotUDigitalCameras)This is the most rugged digital I have seen. Fully sealed against dust and water. Waterproof to 5 feet underwater (I have gone to 10' without issue). The negatives are the fixed focal length (zoom), and lack of a lens hood (light flares).
Fuji S5000 (http://www.fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/digitalS5000Overview.jsp?item=I616756&dbid=616756& urltype=overview)Digital camera (3 days old): 6.0mp (recorded @ 2816 x 2120), QVGA movies @ 30FPS, 10x (37-370mm) optical zoom with great optics, continuous AF, provision for threaded filters (a circular polarizer is still needed for digital), full manual control, AE priority, exposure compensation, bracketing, etc., etc. I purchased the 512mb memory card for it. You can also get a .79 (28mm), and 1.5x (555mm) teleconverter lenses. The camera is much smaller than our professional 35mm rigs, but is bigger than most digitals available. I bought it for the lens and manual control features.
I will eventually convert completely to digital, as soon as I can print at 6mp for a reasonable price. It won't be long... Anyone want to buy a nice 35mm and darkroom http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/wink.gif?

We purchased a Canon A80 today on the net so it won't be here for a few days.
Thanks to all the posters here and all the links. It did help in making the decision. We'll post pictures from the upcoming Sierra Madre trip and you can be the judge if it was the right choice.
This will be replacing our HP Photo Smart C20. The purchase price is/was about the same for both. The C20 was first generation digital technology.

I have had an Olympus C-700 and C-730 ultra-zoom for several years and have been quite happy with them. The C-730 is the better of the two. They are about the size of your old Nikon if I remember it correctly. I think they're up to the C-770 now.
C-730: 3.2megapixel, 10x optical zoom, 3x digital zoom, uses 128MB smartmedia or 512MB xD cards. I paid about $500 for it two years ago. I saw ads for the C-750 (4megapixel) for $360 to $550 earlier today.

Awesome!! I am really interested to know how you like it.I really like the Canon A80. I used to do some photography but had gotten away from it. Peggy takes most of the pictures on our trips. I had bought the HP C20 as an inexpenisve point and shoot to put pictures on the web. I can really say that technology has come a long ways. The A80is some little computer that they are selling for $340.
It can still be a point and shoot camera because it figures out so many things for you. And it probablyfigures them out a lot better then I could figure them myself. I was really happy with the results on the cameras automatic settings. And it does everything so fast.
I took about 800 pictures on the April 2004 Sierra Madre Trip. I may not have gotten back into photography but I did get into picture taking in a big way.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif

Focus on a good lens. I think 6x is the minimum (IMO) for the focal length and an f-stop (apeture) of 2.0 to 3.0 at the widest focal length. Also make sure you can fit filters to it. Graduated nuetral density filters and polarizers are still needed for digital cameras...
After that, anything over 4.0 mp is really overkill unless you plan on printing posters or going pro. I take all of my shots at 3mp. With the basics of the camera covered all you need for a good shot is composition, subject and lighting http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/camera_flash.gif

I researched this Fujifilm camera I'm looking at. It has the 6x optical zoom and 3.4 digital. I'm prefer 10x, but money is a limiting factor. The available aperture on this camera is F 2.8/F4.8/F8.2(Wide-Angle). That's within what you listed. The camera comes with a Lens Adapter / Filter Ring (55mm), that will allow me to use my polarizers. So, it seems to meet the basic requirements, but is 260 too much? Shopping around I'm thinking that is a decent price for what I'm looking at.

I currently use a Kodak DX6340 digital. 3.1 megapixel, 4x optical, 10x digital zoom, auto/manual mode and a host of other features.
I purchased my first digital camera in 1998 and my 35mm SLRs have been relagated to the closet since. Not that they're better photographically (but they're getting so good now as to close the gap), but because once you buy the camera, you never have to buy film or have it processed again, and because I view and use my photos on my computer more than the dusty old albums I've got stashed in the attic.
My first two digital cameras were Sony Mavicas. I had the original FD5 first (640x480 resolution), 1998-2001. I had an old 386 computer and the floppy disk media of the Mavica made sense. Shoot the photo, pop into the computer, presto! Floppy disks were and are cheap. Memory cards for early digitals were super expensive. I generally shoot hundreds of photos per trip and on a daily basis I shoot many photos, so cheap and easy was important to me.
In 2001 the original Mavica died, the read/write head started causing disk errors. I had a newer computer then, but did not have USB ports. Memory was still fairly expensive and I didn't want to leave the ease of floppy disk storage. So I bought an FD8(?). 1.3 megapixel. I used this camera until January of this year and bought the Kodak. Last year I purchased a laptop computer, with USB ports. Media is much cheaper now. And I take my laptop on trips so I can easily download my camera when I fill up both memory cards.
I'm rough on electronics in the field. I've already damaged my Kodak a couple months ago when I was in Death Valley during a media day that the Park Service held to give tours of the flood damaged areas before the park opened. I had the camera in my hand, lens downward, when I had a rock roll out from under me and I fell into a gully and landed square on the lens. Fortunately I managed to get the camera working again, but it took a half hour and I lost a lot of potential images. I didn't take a backup camera. See my essay at http://www.gbr.death-valley.us/essays/dv-flashfloods.htm
So even though I'd love one of those SLR type of cameras, cheap is best for me because I know I'd destroy one of those new fancy cameras in no time.

I got at Fry's electronics a $200 Kodak 5M pixel camera for my nephew the other day. The prices are coming down weekly...
Still the waiting time to take a picture kills when you have kids.

I need a new camera, and I am looking into this one at this time

I am not into photography however I think is time for a new camera, just because mine is outdated and I would like to look at better picture quality, I am looking at just snapping pictures with out making any adjustments, in auto pilot if you wish!
Your thoughts on this camera that I am looking at?
Plus for the price...199.00 thru Costco with a 90 day return policy.

I'll be buying two cameras soon.
The new Olympus E3 for me pro needs, and the Olympus 790SW (Water Proof to 10 feet, and drop proof to 3 feet), great cameras both. Besides I'm very dedicated to Olympus since my first camera.

We just bought a combo Canon PowerShot A710 camera bundled with a Selphy CP730 photo printer, on sale at Circuit City for $250. It's $299 in the store but the on-line price is $249.99 (which they'll honor if you mention it.) The 710 is a nice 7.1-Mpixel camera with a 6X optical zoom, Digic II processor and image stabilization. The A710 alone is running about $265+ and the printer $99.
