I pick up all the parts I need (still need upper ball joints) to put manual hubs on my truck. Is this KILLER or what?? This was something I wanted when I was shopping for my truck, but in 2001 Toyota stopped this option for my truck (all USA trucks I think) so I couldn't get it. I needed to wait till I was over 36K to make this mod. I didn't plan to do it this soon, but a guy was selling the parts here in No. Cal, so on Sat Anita and I drove north 200 miles to meet him 1/2 way.

Here is a link that talks about some of the benefits to this mod.

http://www.offroadsolutions.com/technicalarticles/manual_hub_conversion.htm

This is a mod the our Toyota's are lucky to be able to do. Most other makes in our size truck don't offer these parts and can not be done. One 2nd big plus the don't talk about in the link, is my front end becomes full-floatinghttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/hop.gif . This is just iceing on the cake.

Next to swapping in a straight axel, this is killer.

Steve, congrats! That is indeed a awesome mod. The "full floating" aspect is very cool. All axles should have been designed as full floaters IMO. The semi-float design is a half assed axle. I am looking into full float conversions for both of my axles (contrary to popular belief, not all strait steering axles are full floaters---mine has to haveat least the stub shaft in it in order to be driven). But it is going to cost close to a grand per axle to accomplish that.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif

Aha,

The guys at ProTrux were trying to sell me to the manual hub before. I never gave that much importance to it since I was looking for the comfort of not having to stop for locking and unlocking.
But I can't go much on the lift ...

I will check your after it is done.

http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/supercool.gif That's way cool. Now you should get the ARB front locker http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

I still love my ADD though http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Now you should get the ARB front lockerI think I'd look for a spool first, but I hear locking the front endis a good way to snap axels. Of course that may have more to do with tire size. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif

I'm mainly wanted this because, I like full-floaters andthe reduced wear and MPG increase.I'll still have the ADD, but just need to set these when I air down. Also finding them at a good price was a PLUS http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/beertoast.gif

How about a quick tutorial on front ends? Full floating, semi-floating, IFS, straight axle and all the other terms that are used?http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif

</div>Why a spool??

I agree it's a good way to snap axles if you are careless. But you have an auto, so your application f torque should be a bit smoother with regards to the skinny pedal - that should help reduce your risk, and add to that the manual hubs which should relieve some of the strain on the axles from the full-float aspect.

Definitely let me know how the MPG is affected. I didn't think it made a significant difference, but if it does... that would be COOL!

You will have the manuals, plus the ADD (when the hubs are engaged) so kind of the best of both worlds (unless you are in the rain and mud... LOL!)

Keep us updated. Are you doing the work? Or are you taking it to a shop?

Semi-floating = Vehicle weight supported by drive axle, like you have.

Full-floating = vehicle weight is supported by a housing, and the drive axle only moves the vehicle.

Wow lots to answer.

I'm not sure if they make a spool for my diff. But they are always better if you don't need a differential. With ADD I can turn off the lock-up just like an ARB for about $500 less

With any type of diff lock in the front I can load one axle to 100%, not good.

The MPG is not a big selling point. I'll be lucky to save a few cents per gallon, but since I'm installing these early in the life of my truck, they will pay for theselfs by the time I hit the 100K mark

Not sure what you mean about the rain and mud.

I'm goint to do the work myself after I find out all the torque specs. I'm also going to install new ball-joints.

Steve, I would really give the spool idea a second thought (and a third and a fourth.....). The spool is definately stronger than a conventional differential, but you are going to be putting huge loads on your half shafts when you are turning while the hubs are engaged, unless you are on a soft or slippery surface, and you are going to induce a huge amount of understeer (again, when the hubs are locked). Places like Moab are going to cause you alot of headaches. Even the most hard core of the rock crawlers won't run spools up front.
Oh, how do you plan to keep you ADD with a spool? The spool will replace everything except the ring and pinion gears and bearings.http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/confused.gif

How about a quick tutorial on front ends?....... straight axleOpps I missed straight axle:

We are not really using this term correct, but in 4X4 it common to call "straight axle" the solid front axle like old 4X4's used, before IFS. Brians Jeep and Dave's old 4runner has what we mean by a straight axle. Bob you may hear the term SAS someday, it's a Striaght Axle Swap, thats where they remove the IFS parts and install a new axle.

Hope this helps

BTY, I have NO plans on a front locker, maybe if I re-gear, but not till then. Heck I might SAS my Taco for that.

Regarding the spool, yea, what Goodtimes said.If you put a regular "full time" locker in there, like a Lock-Rite, then you could effectively use the ADD switch to disengage the right side I think, to make it easier to turn when off-roading while you have the hubs locked. But you said you aren't doing a locker until you do your SAS anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I meant that if you pull off of the paved road, onto a primitive road, and it's raining and all muddy, you will have to get out and get all soaked and muddy to lock your hubs before you proceed down the trail. C'mon, I have to razz you about something http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif </div>
That is awesome that you are gonna do it! Man, the bat cave's secret shop must be loaded with cool equipment... http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/cool.gif </div>
