I believe I will be alone in 4th of July.
The family is giving up on me and going to Brazil.
</o:p>
Who is interested in a trip in Northern California?
I am not sure where. I am open for suggestions:
- Costal
- Sierras
- Mountain with lakes
- Close to Rivers
- Including a Hike

I'm ready! http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/jumpin.gif

I can get a cheap roundtrip flight to San Jose. Is that convenient enough for you to pick me up? I will have to ride with you in your 4runner. I could just bring my backpack loaded and ready to go. Let's do it!

Do you only have July 4th (Friday) off from work? Or should I come on Thursday? I will need to be dropped off at the airport on Sunday or Monday.

Northern CA is quite far, if you are talking about central CA we might be able to do a long weekend.

As far as I know we don't have anything for that date, I'll verify...

Baja,

Lets do it.
Go a head and get the tickets. San Jose or Oakland are close to home. 30, 40 min max.
I am excited about this. Then we can share the pictures with people around here.

I can pick you up Thursday night. Actually, why don't you fly to Oakland since I will be there Thursday night coming back from San Diego.
Are you doing Southwest?

Get your return flight on Sunday night.
This is great!

OK people who else?

Sounds like fun, but we'll be resting up between tours and"house mods"and just spending the 4th bbqing &amp; enjoying the big high school fireworks showright from our own backyard. Dogs like it better that way anyway. When Mommie and Daddy are gone and those big booms go off right behind their back yard - it scares them to death. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif

Hello,

I like to see the Forum busy again.

Let me try to address the questions.

Baja, I am not sure why I mentioned Sunday. Monday would be OK too. But I guess is too late now uh?
If not, be free to try to get a Monday flight. I get to Oakland airport at ~6:30 AM. That means I am up every Monday around 4:30 AM. Ouch. I get to work around 10:00 AM. It takes me just ~ 6 hours commuting.

Uwe, the drive will take you 8 hours at least. I did with one or two stops last time to get gas/lunch. That means you would need to leave Thursday afternoon and sleep over my place arriving Thursday very late or early Friday depend how you want to see it.

Come on Good Times, 'just do it'.

Yuma in July hot? I don't think so but you won't know until you try it.

You go to Yuma and stay in a nice motel with A/C, hope it works. You go out to dinner to nice restaurant with A/C. You come out at midnight and go swimming because it's cool enough. Then you get up early and go out in the desert where it's really hot. El Golfo should just be stiffling. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun.

Yuma, Northern California, or home. Your choice.

Bob,

Sorry we didn't call, but it's not like we went to Palm Springs for fun! We had to attend a wedding of someone I hardly know, but Srisuda was supposed to go... We went around noon and got back at night. Saturday morning and Sunday was booked, so no time http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/cry.gif

Jack,

An advertising competition for trips?? Let's just list the plain facts...http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif

We'll have toweigh all the pros and cons. Knowing us we won't be able to decide and end up wasting the weekend away at homehttp://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif Nah, that must not happen!

Data?

Facts:
- Lake Tahoe is famous for outdoors activities.
- It has a beautiful blue water lake.
- It is hight on the mountains. It will not be as hot as you may find in the deserts.
- It has other activities besides 4WD if you are looking for something after the trails.
- It will have two of the coolest people on this board in there.
- It is within a driving distance. If you drive 4 hours, Srisuda drive the other part. You will not even feel it.

You fun level will go to 90%+ with confidence within 6 sigma on the results.

This should get you and Bob coming.

You did buy your Mexican insurance by the year?http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smile.gif This has me interested. Here is my competitive take:
Yuma
Facts:
- Lake Tahoe is famous for outdoors activities.
Yuma is known as the Willamsburg of the West and the history of the Yuma Crossing is without equal
- It has a beautiful blue water lake.
It has a former mighty river that is not so might anymore and the mosquitos will be terrible.
- It is hight on the mountains. It will not be as hot as you may find in the deserts.
It is in the deepest depression and could be the hottest place on the face of the earth. Nobody in their right mind would consider it. (sorry Al)
- It has other activities besides 4WD if you are looking for something after the trails.
It's going to be too hot to do anything and you'll save lots of money because everything will be closed.
- It will have two of the coolest people on this board in there.
If anyone goes they will be lunatics and they will die. The board will be better off without them.
- It is within a driving distance. If you drive 4 hours, Srisuda drive the other part. You will not even feel it.
It is a lot closer for everybody but Jack
You fun level will go to 90%+ with confidence within 6 sigma on the results.
We may actually accomplish something or we may not. But we'll have a good time. I don't know how to measure it but I am pretty good at doing it.

I need to talk to the chief. Talking to the indian is not taking me anywhere.

Ask Peggy what she wants to do. The exciting mountains, blue water, pine trees, fresh cold air, and a bit of drive. Or the boring hot air, no vegetation, no shade, desert like view, and a medium drive.

I know her answer. So start planning your trip up north. It will be cool. It will be fun. It will be great!

Lake Tahoe BabyThis is a tough challenge. The last three photographers in Yuma in July perished. One became encased in mud while seeking relief in the Colorado River. The humidity was so low that by the time he got into the river it was gone.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smhair.gif He was stuck forever and can still be seen every July. The second, who's birthday was the Fourth of July, expired while inhaling to gather enough air to blow out the candles on his birthday cake. His lungs were instantly seared by the hot dry air. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif The third fell victim to dehydration while walking from his car to the one-hour photo booth. Only problem is announcing it this early, I'm going to have to make a special deal with the Yuma Fire Department to handle the increased attendence. Casualty rate is 50% from the car to the auditorium.

Bob,

You can do the same from our Photo gallery. While seeing the image, Rick click the mouse, copy the Picture URL, then paste it in your posting as a Image URL.
I did not copy the images to our photo gallery because of copy right. I am not sure people would like me to get their pictures and save without them giving me the OK.

Got it?
But you are correct that I would like us to keep the pictures attached to the posting or using our own photo gallery. That will prevent
our postings to have missing links.

Doesn't work anymore. New server software? When viewing the image this is the url http://www.rxtx.com:8085/4wdtrips/photogallery/details.php?image_id=622

But this is the url to actually get to the image taken from the image properties.

http://www.rxtx.com:8085/4wdtrips/photogallery/data/media/55/yuma4wd.jpg

And here's a suggestion for the forum software. The format of image size is height x width 480x640. I think the normal format is 640 x 480. I suggest changing to width and height. And both the image and hyperlink dialogs default to http://. If you don't delete those before copy your link it does a double like http://http://. I suggest removing the default.

Baja, if it is of any comfort, my little sister has checked her backpack several times, and it has survived (It even came through Steves area of 'responsibility' (and I use that term loosely--hahaha) once. Of course it doesn't have much in the lines of compression straps and the such hanging off the outside of it.

You may also consider a BIG duffle bag to put your pack inside of (like the one I have for all my camping (not backpacking) stuff. Of course that would be a capitol expendature, and you would probably have to get that cleared with the boss. Of course, if you had a big bag like that, you probably wouldn't need to bring your pack would you?

Be careful what you joke about. You might be doing it someday.

Al, I'm in if you want to do it. Let's see if we can work up a plan.

I'm thinking a lesiurely trip. Leave for Yuma on the 4th in the morning. Meet up at high noon just to establish we have no common sense. Do some historical stuff, some airconditioned museums, if anything is open. Maybe see where Padre Graces died. I'd like to see the confluence of the Gila and the Colorado Rivers.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/idea.gif Hey, maybe we can cross the Colorado just like Kino and Garces did. Bring your bathing suit. Let's see I know a great Mexican Restaurant with killer Margaritas, an old fiftys style motel on the main drag with a swimming pool in the middle. We can go swimming at midnight. Bring your bathing suit.

Saturday head to El Golfo and some exploring. I never been there. Find a motel for the night. I might like to find the road out to the railroad tracks and on to Rocky Point. Not take it.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/nono.gif but find it. We wouldn't want to get too close to 32114

Sunday explore andleave for home about noon.

YukonBob,

You're on the mark. The Yuma part sounds great, have never stoped in Yuma for more than food &amp; gas. Lets do the crossing. I'm an early riser, so mid morning meeting in Yuma also works for me. Can you recommend a motel in Yuma &amp; should we make reservations?

I've never stayed in a motel in El Golfo &amp; not sure what accomodations we will find. I've always camped on the beach. Lets's see what we can find, but be prepared to camp, don't forget it is a holiday weekend.

I'm pretty familiar with the roads. I want to find the road to the confluence that comes up from the beach. That would be the best route, not the road that follows the railroad from the El Golfo road.

Because it is a holiday weekend, the border crossing will be heavy in the afternoon. Be prepared.

I would much prefer to go to the mountains with streams and lakes, but it's 1100+ miles roundtrip to Lake Tahoe from here and we have to go through LA.This makes me wonder what's more insane: Yuma in summer or going through LA on the eve of a holiday weekendhttp://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif ?
Yuma/El Golfo is less than half the drive and no LA!

What about the Mexico part. It's not Baja, so do you need to do the whole car import deal? Or just car insurance?

I've never been to El Golfo but I'd be surprised if we see many Americans. Somelocals from Mexicali and San Luis Rio Colorado maybe. We are kind of bucking the tourist trend. But we'll be ready to camp if big city life doesn't suit us.

Al, I think waiting until we get there to motel will work. I'll go out on a limb and say we'll have our choice. Of course, I said the same thing about Ranco Mirage last Friday. Reservations for dinner? It's the middle of summer! Our biggest worry will be if there is anything open. We got there and the temperature was in 70's and everything was packed. It's all about trade-offs. Nice temperature, lots of people. I hope the temperature isn't too nice in Lake Tahoe over a holiday weekend.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/devil.gif

I'm not sure we're going to be able to send any pictures. Melting cameras and all that mess. When it gets too hot, you find alternatives. What I will try and do is draw some pictures. I have attached a sketch by J Ross Browne for his 1864 book Adventures in the Apache Country. It is a view of Fort Yuma from the Arizona side. I presume that is the Gila coming in from the right side. I've seen a lithograph that pretty much covers the same area and I'm going to guess that we'll be able to find the observation point. All I have to do is learn to draw between now and July 4th. Uwe became a HAM in less than two weeks so maybe it's possible.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Wow! That's cool! It's a small world, isn't it?

This guy lived in Yuma and worked at the college there. He was once told by a woman that to truly acquire the spanish language, you need to practice and speak it for 7 years. Any less, and you will not effectively retain it should you stop using it. Once you have it for 7 consistent years, it will always be with you.

So, he crossed the border and rented an apartment in San Luis. He commuted back and forth across the border to go to work every day for 7 years. He immersed himself with the floods of transient workers that cross the border there every day. Now he knows the language and the people. Anyway, I met him at a group that is getting together once a week for spanish conversation - pretty cool! Next week, I'll ask him about the Yuma crossing http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Uwe, you can get started on your heliograph tech license here (http://usaic.hua.army.mil/history/Html/Rolak.htmlhttp://usaic.hua.army.mil/history/Html/Rolak.html). The license is also good in Mexico as there is a bilateral agreement. You have less than two weeks. I think the mount will be your biggest hurdle.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/headscratch.gif

I wonder whether we should go at all, maybe I just work and then save the day for a later trip, like the crowded October. It doesn't help that we have to do the overseas family thing in September...costs valuable 4x4 time. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif
But how good can the concentration be when I know everone is out having fun (that includes SteveS, he may not be out, but the sound 'ka-ching' is pleasant anywherehttp://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

Biggest problem with the heliograph is June Gloom down here!!!! Haven't seen this http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/natur/sunny.gifin weeks!

OK folks I am back.

I did not sleep much that last nights but here I am.
The family is safe in Brazil.
The house 99% ready. You can mark closed all the 'mods' we had listed before. + Georgia built an office at the SPA room. Now it is 1/2 SPA 1/2 an office, wood all around. I need to take some pictures for you. Better, it will have one of those virtual tours that you can take. Lets see what they get.

What? the missing 1%!? Darn you had to ask.
I was changing the toilet kit. After changing the whole thing (valves, pipes, etc. etc) the water feed line was short! !@#$%%^%%$#%^%^^%&^%%^%^^%%
It was 1:30 AM yesterday. Oh man~ !$#$$#%$#%%^^%^%&&&*
Now my nice real-state agent will take care of that.

Huh, Just called Baja because I had a PM from him. My mistake it was an old one. Sorry Baja.

Anyway, Bob sent me a PM telling me that he want to come along but Peggy does not like him barking around.
It seem that he has some king of anti-barking collar that give him an electric stimulus when he barks. No wondering he has these mysterious Internet connection problems....

Uwe, just come along. Never leave for later what you can do now. The later may never come...
I need to call Marcelo, see if he made his mind.

The Yuma Death March in July is shaping up.

We'll be meeting at The Yuma Landing Restaurant and Lounge (http://www.yumalanding.com/)for lunch at noon on the Fourth. It's got to do with landing airplanes and not steamboats.

The next stop will be The Yuma Crossing State Historical Park (http://www.desertusa.com/yuma/azyumax.html). I like the information ondesert usa websitebetter than the official site (http://www.pr.state.az.us/parkhtml/yumacross.html)but you can chose.

I think we are going to have to pay a visit to state prison historic site (http://www.desertusa.com/yuma/du_yumatp.html). I hear that there is a great view from one of the guard towers of the confluence. Once again here is the link to the official state park site (http://www.pr.state.az.us/parkhtml/yuma.html).

Across the river is the site of Fort Yuma and the original Spanish mission. I think they are going to be closed but we'll give it a look from the other side of the river. Here is some information on Fort Yuma (http://www.militarymuseum.org/FtYuma.html)before it became an Indian Reservation.

Then we'll have to decide how best to approach the confluence, if it can be crossed, and if I can make some sketches.

All of the this will be followed by Mexican food, margaritas and a midnight swim in motel pool to discuss the trip to Mexico on Saturday.

Al has suggest that we might make it to Rocky Point on Saturday night.I originally dismissed the idea because of the heat but it doesn't appear the trip is that far and it will bring us close to 32114. Saturday and Sunday are still up for last minute decisions.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/cool.gif

Yes, it's just too far for us for the weekend. We will have to try your Brazilian barbecue at a later time.

At this time it actually looks like we will be staying home. No Yuma either http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/cry.gif, but for that trip we don't really have to decide until Friday morning, it's about 3h from here.

OK, tonight was spanish conversation and cerveza night, and Iasked the Yuma guy about the Yuma crossing. He said you can indeed walk across, but if you plan to exit on the Cali side, it might be a little challenging because there is somewhat of a cliff there. So, now I have visions of you guys waltzing across the colorado, each with a beer bottle stuffed in your back pocket. When you get to the other side, you will pull the beers out, pop the tops, and then "clink" - next, you will pull a sandal off your foot and "high-five" each other by smacking the soles of the sandals in the air.
