Hey, I'm working late again... so I had to avoid brain fry and take a quick break.
I am thinking I would love to get one of these (even though I don't really need it)
A Technitop roof tent - http://www.offroadacademy.com/gear.php
weighs less than 100 pounds. Fits any roof rack.Cost with the optional canopy, poles, and shower enclosure is about $1321 USD + shipping (and tax?).

I was looking for a flip-top camper that is made in So. Cal. but don't know the name and can't find a web site. I'd email the guy I know with one, but since I gone for a while....
I like these, kind of pricey, but something I may do before I need an RV

These are a couple I like. I'd like to have some room to stand up in.

I really like the trailers and pop-ups, but I don't think I'll ever do one with the Tacoma becasue of the weight and the impact it has on 4-wheeling.

I've seen those tents you are talking about Baja, but my concern would be the winds! Would hate to be sleeping in a tent on top of my truck whenthe wind came along and blew the tent and me away!http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/freaked.gif Even if I wasn't in it, I'd hate to see the wind blow the damned tent away!

Baja,
Nice gear!
Can you damage the top of the car by having people on it?
It would be interesting if they had some fold-able legs that would take the load.

NEWBIE</div>
I know this is old but I am new so I thought I would share my experience...I have a Wildernest on my truck. I bought my truck, a 1990 toyota xcab 4x4 from a friend which came with the shell on it. (oh yes, my truck is white, just like most of the others in so cal)</div>
The couple of times I have used it(i've only had the truck for about six months), things went well. Although I forgot to leave the top window/vent open and we ended up with a lot of dew inside in the morning. Which is a problem if you want to take off and explore. There are also two support poles that attach to the bed portion once extended. We have not had the tent in rough winds yet...</div>
But the idea is great, I think the guy was probably ahead of his time. Because as Baja said, they are out of business. </div>

Oh, nice to have someone with experience on these here.
Can't wait to see your setup.
I am the one that holds the group behind while I pack, try to, my gear. A setup like this would help. But I need to use all the space I can on the roof rack.

I really hope to do a trip with Bluepaddler so we can see the Wildernest up close. I think they are really neat.
Jack, I just had a visit with my friend Wes, and got a tour of the latest mods on his VW Syncro 4x4 van. You would love it. It has a pop-up that provides a loft bed, but there is also another bed on the lower level. Despite all of the camper room, there is still a nice roof rack area at the front of the van. He just got a super nice cargo pack with adjustable straps/buckles that was made specifically for the VW, and he can even access the bag from the comfort of his loft while he is inside the camper. I thought that was really cool. I didn't have my camera with me, or I would have snapped some pics.

White Toyotas with roof-top-tents (http://www.confluence.org/photo.php?visitid=7921&pic=ALL)in action in Africa.
Just read this confluence visit report (http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?visitid=7921)and thought I share it here since it's kind of on-topic

I just remembered that the other kind of flip-top tent is made by or called a flip-pac, and I believe the website is just that .com. It is the same principle as my Wildernest, but instead of flipping over the passenger side, it flips directly over the cab. I will try to see if I can find the website again, and post it here.

That website for the other truck camper/tent is:</div>
www.flippac.com (http://www.flippac.com)</div>
They are not cheap though, I think they run around $2000. I know I have an original brochure for mine with a price written on it...$2300. AND, on that subject. I do remember with our last trip, we had condensation allover the inside of the tent camperhttp://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/emoticons/confused.gif . Which I know is a normal thing that happens. That is just a draw back of my set up, b/c I don't like putting the tent away when it is still wet. </div>

Jack,
Maybe I should cash in all of my assets and move to Brazil! With the way new vehicle choices are progressing we will all be driving Honda Elements in Baja by 2010...
