Hello,
Since I have almost none experience in DV. I go with the nicer description. Vote on #1.
By the way, I am about to update the server.
It will have a calendar for the events and voting capability.
We will see if I finish it tonight.

Darn, the dates you have picked are the same dates as our Mojave Expedition and bonus trip. Wish I could go with you guys and meet those of you I don't know. We are really getting interested in Death Valley - we have already been there 3 times since October, previously had only been there twice in ten years. Just did part of Harry's Death Valley trip in January and really enjoyed it. Titus Canyon is beautiful. If you opt for that and want to check out a couple of ghost towns as well as beautiful scenery, stop in Rhyolite before heading into Titus, and Leadville. On our "to-do" list is to eventually develope a Ghost Towns of Death Valley tour for eco4wd.
Steve is the expert on Death Valley, from what I understand, he has been there many many times so he can give you lots of ideas. To do a little research on your own - some good books are :
Hiking Death Valley: A guide to its Natural Wonders and Mining Past by Michel Digonnet
The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park by T. Scott & Betty Tucker-Bryan.
Death Valley SUV Trails - A Guide to 46 interesting 4-wheeling Excursions in the Death Valley Country by Roger Mitchell

Hello,
Do I see dates being set?
Starting 4/12 to 4/14(+)
For me, it will probably be the 3 days deal.
So we can plan some activities for the 3 days trip [:(], and for a longer run for people that can stay longer [:p].

Ok, glad to hear some people are going to be able to make it!
I have been doing some research (well....a little anyway), and due to the number of people coming, and the strong possibility of having children along, I think I am going to scrap the hiking plans for the first few days. I think some exploration in our 4x4's would be more appropriate.
With that said, I am looking at two different routes, and would like everyones opinions on them.
The first would be the loop around Hunter Mountain. This would take us to such places as the Lippincott Mine, The Racetrack, Teakettle Junction, Hidden Valley, and of course Hunter Mountain. This is about 65 miles of back road travel, some of which is rumored to be rough going, with a total of about 110 miles with no services. We would start and end in Paniment Springs.
The second would be Titus Canyon. This would take us through Titus Canyon (big surprize there!), and of course the "titus canyon narrows", which, at the narrowest point is about 15 feet. The walls reach several hundred feet in places (or so I hear--i've never been there). The trail starts just outside of Beatty (NV), and ends about 20 miles north of Stovepipe Wells. This trail should be very easy....2 wheel drive cars have been known to get through this route.
Personally, I am leaning towards the first one, because it would take us to the Race Track, which is on my list of things to see anyway.....but I would also be quite happy to take a trip down Titus Canyon.
Let me know what you fine folks think. Oh heck, we may as well have Steve's opinion too!http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/laugh2.gif

Good to see you made it to the board Anita! I have already warned Steve that I will be hitting him up for trail info in the near future!
I have only done one DV trip so far, and it was strictly a backpacking trip. My little sister and I went from the top of Cottonwood Canyon (where the road ends), up through the rest of cottonwood, across to the top of marble Canyon, down that, and then back up cottonwood to where the truck was parked. 25 or 26 miles in 2 days (well, day and a half really...we got back about 2:00pm on day #2). This time, I am not venturing quite so far off into the boonies, and hope to be able to slow down a bit.

If you guys are looking for wildflowers, as originally posted, it's an early bloom this year. On Harry's DV trip in January we were already seeing little tiny seedlings at the Geologist Cabin, so I imagine things are blossoming now. More recent reports from others say that the Joshua tree is starting to bloom as well.
Went to the Western Mojave - El Pasos, Mesquite Canyon, Iron Canyon on Sunday and the desert is carpeted with wildflowers throughout that area. It was beautiful!

Yes, I will certainly consider shorter hiking trips! That is why I asked, I want everyone who goes to have a good time! We could even eliminate the hiking trips for a few days too, just explore from the comfort of our 4x4's. (the lazy side of me really likes that idea!http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/happy/supergrin.gif)
I'm following that other thread too....but it scares me. I'm still not into the 21st century when it comes to computer stuff (they seem to quit working anytime I get a hammer or torch near themhttp://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/sad/nixweiss.gif).
Seriously though, I don't know if I will have time to put all that together anywhere besides in my mind! My schedual currently has me leaving home at 9:00am and getting home at 10:00pm...followed by homework (which I should be doing right now....).
I will do some research into some of the 4x4 trails, and see if I can find something interesting. Anyone with suggestions, feel free to let me know!

I will check on my Kids break too.
Regarding the hiking, 10 miles will be a kind of long for the kids.
Can you consider shorter hikings?
thanks,

p.s. Please read the discussion on preparing for new trips. We are talking about the pcitures / maps / tracks / GPS . It will give you extra work but the price is right. Ha ha ha [:D]

Ok, it sounds like we have a few people interested in going! That is great!
But it brings up a couple of issues that we need to address so that I can continue with the planning. It looks like some people are interested in coming for the weekend (4-11/12/13). My original (tentative) plan is for a day hike (probably 5 - 10 miles) each day. For those that are coming (or considering it), are you OK with hiking, or should I do a little research into some of the off-hiway trails? I would be just as happy exploring the off road trails as I would hiking. The original plan was set up assuming I would be making the trip alone, so I wasn't going to stray too far off the well beaten path incase of vehicle trouble (nothing like being stranded in Death Valley 30 miles from the nearest "road"). But if we have more vehicles going, I would be just fine with wandering off into the wilderness in the jeep.
So what do y'all think? Stick with the hiking, or go for the 4-wheeling?

I'm going to wait until we get back from Baja to make a decision. Still not sure about the time or place. It will probably be a quick decision based on wild flower reports. Still waiting to get feedback from others about good places. Traveling with goodtimes is always a plus.
Three days would be good.

Well, I plan to be in Death Valley from April 12th - 17th or 18th. Unfortunately, the dates are not flexible (spring break), but my plan is....sort of.
As of right now, (and this is not set in stone), I am looking at a day in the dunes, a day in Badwater Basin, a day exploring Ubehebe Crater and Ubehebe Mine, followed by a day (or two) exploring Corridor Canyon. I may camp in, or near, the canyon, which is to say, camp will have to be carried about 2 miles into the back country since there are no roads (that I know of) going back to the canyon. Then a day on/around the race track. The basic idea is to travel/explore the loop formed by Paniment Springs, Stovepipe Wells, Scotty's Castly, and the Race Track (ending up back in Paniment Springs).
Anyone is welcome to come, I would love to have the company! Even if someone only wants to meet up for a day or two, that would be great!

Peggy and I think the wild flowers are going to be very nice this year. We're going to make an effort to get out in the desert and see them.
Death Valley is one of our favorite places. The rooms at the Furance Creek Ranch are a little expensive, $110 in their latest email promotion. We could stay in Beatty. Maybe we could explore up north to Gold Point. Camping at the hot springs in Saline Valley is always an option. I guess it depends on the flowers. I'm thinking three or four days over a weekend.
Anybody got an thoughts or suggest for a good place in California or Arizona? Anybody want to come along?

Aha,
Another place I was not able to explore yet. There is always something coming when I have a trip to Death Valley. Last time I had to pull the plug two days before the trip.
I never did a 4WD trip there. Just drove once on the road to check it out on the way home from one of Harry's trip.
I vote for Death Valley!

I love Death Valley and it has been about a year since I was there. Almost anywhere you go in DV is great. So I am up for any trails that you pick, a few of the tougher ones would be nice too. And I wouldn't mind a few good hikes to work off all the beer that I might want to have. I know from experience that SteveS knows his way around, but beware of those saucy and impudent people.

Ok, I have been talking to Steve about the routes that I posted in the other thread for everyone to vote on...(of course no one has done so), but it seems that there is a change of plans. So ignore that poll.
What I need to know, is how many of you are staying for how long. It sounds like some people are making a 3 day weekend out of it. Is that 3 days in Death Valley, or 2 in DV and driving home on the third?
I have been talking to steve about a MUCH longer route, one that would be best over 3 days, but has a fairly easy exit on day #2 for those who need to leave early.
In addition, I need to get a vehicle count, and a head count, to make sure that I don't run into any permitting problems from having too large of a group. I don't see that becoming a issue, but if I have accurate numbers early, I can make sure all is OK with the powers that be.

Hey folks. I have a bit of bad news about this trip. Nothing is confirmed yet, but.....
It seems that Daimler-Chrysler is putting on a little shin-dig for Rubicon owners out in Moab on April 17th (Rubicons first anniversary). Dan Mickand the jeep product developement team will be out there with us.
I haven't decided if I am going yet. I have a buddy in Alaska that has been wanting to fly down and go out there with me...but with this short of notice, he may not be able to make it. So, if I decide to go, I may have a extra seat if anyone is interested.

This event is actually part of the Easter Jeep Safari....it just happens that the two people who headed the project are going to be in attendance, and will be running a portion of 7 Mile Rim (Wipe out hill) with a bunch of rubicon owners, and with Dan Mick spotting (if you have ever gone up wipe out hill, you know that it isn't that technical of an obstical that you needa professional spotter).....
So, long story really short.....I'm going to Death Valley. I'll do Moab next spring.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smile.gif

Hahaha....I thought about that. That would be fun. I did that last time I went up dishpan springs, but I almost got in trouble at the very end of the rock garden at the river crossing (deep creek). But I was able to save face by leaving the jeep idling in 4-lo 1st gear (with both lockers on), getting out andhelping the jeep over the rocks that were holding me up by lifting up on the rear bumper and pushing it forward, then just to look really cool, I calmly walked back up to the jeep (now idling up the trail), and climbing back in, like it was a "every day" type of thing.http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/tongue.gif </div>

I just had this funny vision... maybe for a Rubicon commercial or something...
a guy drives his Jeep up to the rock garden, [the camera switches to inside the vehicle, shows him shift into 4-lo and engaging the lockers] Then the camera outside shows him slide out of the Jeep, and walk over to a shady spot under a tree, then proceeds to crack open a cold beverage. He sips his beverage while he watches the Jeep crawl through the rock garden, then takes some pics of the action with his digi-cam, then moseys on over and climbs back in. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/lol.gif

All right folks. Here it is. The long awaited "plan".
Due to the fact that several people need to leave on Sunday, things have changed a bit, but I think we have a good trip laid out for everyone. This will get us into some of the more remote areas, on the less traveled roads....places that you probably shouldn't go alone (due to it being so far off the beaten path).
More info will follow as it becomes available (availability of rooms, etc.).
So here we go.
Saturday morning (april 12th), we depart Big Pine at 8:00am (just south of Bishop on 395). From there we will enter Death Valley on "Death Valley Rd" (NW corner of DV). From there we will pick up Eureka Valley Rd, and head south to the Eureka Sand Dunes, Dedeckera Canyon, Steel Pass, and finally the Saline Hot Springs. From there we will head East on Saline Valley Rd, before headingNE againon Lippencott Mine Rd. From there, we will head due north to the Racetrack and Teakettle junction, before turning south again into Hidden Valley, where we plan to set up camp on Saturday night in the general vicinity of Lost burrow mine.
Of course, we will be stopping along the way to check things out as we go. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/wink.gif
Sunday Morning, we once again need a fairly early start (would be great to be moving by 9:00am). If we didnt' get a chance to look at Lost Burrow Mine on Saturday, it would be a good first stop on Sunday. Then we will continue south to Hunter Mountain, and finally back to Saline Valley Rd, which will take us to 190.
It will probably be early afternoon when we get back to that point, and would be a good departure point for those who need to leave on Sunday, unless they want a late departure, in which case they can continue on to check out Darwin Falls with the rest of us. After we are done goofing off there, the plan it to head down the east side of the Argus Range, and camp Sunday Night just south of the park boundry.
Monday morning (if there is anyone left), the plan is to work our way down to Ballarat, on to Golar Wash, and then continue east to 178, then north into Furnas Creek for the night. Ok, so the plans for monday are kind of vague. Well, we don't know how many are planning on staying that long, if anyone (besides myself). So we didn't spend much time on it. But if anyone does want to stay for an additional day (or two, or three, or four, or.....), I still plan on being there until Thursday or Friday.
So, have we managed to scare anyone off yet?
Who is still in, and how long are you staying?

Not bad for a last minute plan.

Here is some info regarding hotels for DV. We have a reservation at the Big Pine Motel for April 11. Phone number is 760-938-2282. Rooms are $36-$42. They plenty of rooms. We have a reservation at Furnace Creek for April 14. Phone number is 760-786-2345. Rooms are $142-$164. They have a few rooms left. They also have a couple of cabins for 4110 but they were smoking only. They have a 48-hour cancellation. I wouldn't wait too long to make reservations at Furnace Creek. You can always cancel them later on. Good luck!

Hey guys!
Well, this trip sounds like alot of fun...can count me and the boy (Nicholas) in for at least Friday thru Sunday afternoon...slight chance of staying until Monday, but we'll see...
DV is a cool (well, maybe not, he he) place and it'll be nice to see it again; it's been many moons!
fwiw - are there many gas stations in the vicinity? Obviously, talking about the "main" road ;) just curious...hate to run out in those parts!

No,very few places to get gas (for your vehicle) We will fill up at Big Pine (sat morning), then we won't be able to get fuel till we get to Panamint Springs (PS)on Sun afternoon, that is if they have gas. I know my truck will make it, but if you use alot of fuel, or have a small tank, carry extra. For people heading home on Sunday, you needfuel to get to Olancha, unless you head home via PS.
Glad to see you are making it John.
FYI Anita said:

That should read:

I know I'm the VERY last person to point out type-o's, but I figured it a little easier when you know the "4" should be a "$"
I think by now most of us know why the 4 and the $ use the same key. Since a $X$ and a 4X4 are the same thing. :-)

Here my 2 cents on what has been planned from Tues on.
Since we didn't know who was going, or staying passed Tues, we didn't set-up anything. A & I will need to head home around Tues (if I get the days off) but I'm sure Brian is open to go almost anywhere, and a plan for the other days can be worked out, even if you/we wait till we are in the park.
Is there a list of names that are going?
If no list yet, make sure you put me on it for at least Sat & 1/2 of Sunday. I will update you as soon as I know I have all the days off I asked for.

I'll bring a couple of books, and we all will have our maps, so we can always figure something out Monday evening around the camp fire if we need to.

Thanks for the warning Steve, but I will be camping that night, although I may ask to borrow your shower before dinner that night. Or, depending on how dirty I am, you may ask me to borrow your shower before dinner! hahaha
Jack, back on page 2, I laid out this basic plan for Monday.
'Monday morning (if there is anyone left), the plan is to work our way down to Ballarat, on to Golar Wash, and then continue east to 178, then north into Furnas Creek for the night. Ok, so the plans for monday are kind of vague. Well, we don't know how many are planning on staying that long, if anyone (besides myself). So we didn't spend much time on it. But if anyone does want to stay for an additional day (or two, or three, or four, or.....), I still plan on being there until Thursday or Friday.'
That route would include (as I recall anyway.....) heading south on Panimint Valley Road, and then east to Ballarat. Then south on Indian Ranch Road, east through golar wash, north over Mengal Pass, North-east through Butte Valley, east down Warm Springs Canyon, and then north on 178 back up to Furnace Creek.
As for Tuesday....why don't we consider going up Echo Canyon? It starts right there outside Furnace Creek...we could go up as far as we feel like (how much time do we have?), and then back down.
Wednsday I plan on hiking up to Hungry Bills Ranch, and Thursday I plan on checking out Grotto Canyon to do some rock climbing. Friday, I plan on driving home...

Hello,
Just another status. I got my reservation on the Big Pine Motel.
I check some info on the web. It seems that they just have 14 rooms. I did not have a problem getting mine.
According to Mapblast I will a 6 hour and 40 min drive in front of me.
What is not clear is if I need to get through any pass that may be closed.
I have to get 101, 92, 880, 238, 580, 205, 120, 395, 168.
Who knows which HW has the pass over the mountains that I need to check if it is open?

Jack, as you probably know, the weather in DV can be on the unpredictable side, but here is some info that will hopefully give you an idea of what to expect during the month of April.
Absolute Maximum temp: 110*f
Mean Maximum temp: 90*f
Mean temp:75*f
Mean Minimum temp:60*f
Absolute Minimum temp: 35*f
Those temps are from the official temperature statistics recorded at Furnace Creek, averaged over 70 years, ending in the mid 80's. Credit goes to Michel Digonnet.
Keep in mind that Furnace Creek is pretty close to sea level. Much of our trip will be at a higher elevation.

They also have a couple of cabins for 4110 but they were smoking only. They have a 48-hour cancellation. I wouldn't wait too long to make reservations at Furnace Creek. You can always cancel them later on. Good luck!
AnitaSHello,
I just called Furnace Creek. They are sold out for the 4/14.
Is there any other alternative for something with showers?
If not, the lucky ones that got rooms may consider sharing the shower http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/turn.gif .

Thanks for the warning Steve, but I will be camping that night,....
As for Tuesday....why don't we consider going up Echo Canyon? It starts right there outside Furnace Creek...we could go up as far as we feel like (how much time do we have?), and then back down.
[quote]If it was me, which it's not because I have a roomhttp://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/scool.gif I would be camping on Echo Canyon Road. Thats about the best place close to FC to camp. http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/smilewinkgrin.gif
BTW, Echo Canyon road goes all the way to NV.
I still don't know if I have those days off, so my room may be up for sale. :-(

Jack, I don't like rules. Heck, I usually end up breaking them anyway, so I don't set many. About the only steadfast rule I have, is that everyone obide by the rules setforth in my 'standard off road trip disclaimer'.
For those that don't know what my 'standard off road trip disclaimer', I have included it here:
Tread Lightly or you will be asked to leave.
Stupidity (often brought on by excessive drinking), cussing, and/or reckless behavior will not be tolerated (I omit the cussing rule if there are no children within ear-shot).
No driving under the influence of a mood &/or mind altering substance(s).
Everyone is responsible for their own actions.
If you do anything really stupid, I will report you to the proper authorities.
Anyone who contributes to my 'jeep mod fund' (not tax deductable) will be specified as a 'really cool person'.
No party poopers allowed.
I hope you all can find that acceptable.

On the other hand, I have done this before and it wasn't all horrible. We use I15 from here it it misses quite a bit of LA. The problem are Las Vegas travellers, they really should build a high speed train line to get these people of the roads!

Jack, if you really want a hotel room you could probably find one in Beatty at the casino for a reasonable cost. I've used Beatty as the base of operations for many a Death Valley adventure because the prices at Furnace Creek are a little high. Of course, the casino made the cost about the same as staying at Furnace Creek so I'm not sure I did the right thing.

Believe it or not, we never get reserveations in advance. This is a change for the Brazilians. I hope that by dogin this we are not changing our chances to actually make to the trip.
Claudia and Macelo called Georgia to give a hand in making sure she was coming to the trip. Gerogia does not know about the ~ 12 hours drive (~ 6 to L.A. and ~ 6 to Big Pine). Lets keep this way.

Did Roger find that repeater yet? It would be nice if we can say a hello.

I don't know who is coming as far as wives / kids / girlfriends / mistresses ( http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/lol.gif ) are concerned, other than Anita, hence the "???".
These are the people who have said they were going at some point in this thread. I have removed Bob/Peggy, and John since they have very recently said that they were not going.
If I missed anyone, PLEASE let me know ASAP so that we know who to expect (unless you are coming with someone that is already on the list).
If you are on the list, and are not going to make it, again, please let me know so that we know you aren't coming.
As a reminder, we depart the Big Pine Motel at 8:00am, Saturday morning.
Steve, FYI, I am currently hammering out the details with a new guy over at zr2.com about meeting him Sunday night. The plan is to set up camp, then go back into Paniment Springs to meet him at whatever time, and then come back to camp. Details will follow.

About meeting people in PS. Weeellllll I was kind of thinkin, maybe, we could sorta, possiable make a maybe small change on the sunday plan. Not that its a big deal or anything, or not something we have to do, but maybe we could use our Sunday to do a run up Pleasent Canyon :-) Since South park is blocked, Pleasent is going to get alot less use and may overgrow (hence be closed like the 10 other canyons in that area) so we should take all of us up thereBEFORE the the place closes. Its a real neat area, and I seem to remember some good camping area that are outside the park (we could have a campfire). Well maybe not, but if we can I know both Dave and I would love one more shot at that area. So we can talk about this before Sunday, and by then you'll know if you need to meet up with the guy or not.
It would be neat, domiddlePark and maybe go down So. Park to the closer. Just to cry if nothing else. I didn't what to bring this up before, but with our small group it would be killer.
But not something we have to do, I can live with out it. You know once you are up at Roger's pass you are looking at almost the same kind of area that the people who named DV saw as they named it. But thats OK,we'll stick with our plane we had.

Uh-oh. There goes Steve throwing wrenches in the plan....just when I was getting the plan memorized too!http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/lol.gif
I don't have a problem with changes, but where is that going to leave us Monday morning? I have not talked to the "other guy" yet, so we have no definate plans for a meeting spot/time. I also don't have a map here to look at....it sounds like he is leaving home Sunday evening, and has about a 7 hour drive. My initial thought was to meet him in PS monday around 8:00am. That would get us back to camp (hopefully) by the time everyone got things packed up and were ready to move out.I guess I'll have to wait until I get home tonight and take a look at the map......

What? That is one of the goals for the trip. We will see them as we drive to the spots selected by our trip leaders. We will not just drive to see some. Right? Now I am not sure I am making this all confused. Just need to have some fun.

Ok, we are back with Plan A. You know, the plan we had before Steve started mucking things up . (j/k Steve--http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/lol.gif )
I need to be in Panamint Springs to meet the new guy at 8:00 Monday morning.
But, as I mentioned several pages ago, the route is not set in stone until we are already there. So, what that means, is that if we are running ahead of schedule, and have time, we could possibly still go for a drive up Pleasent Canyon instead of Darwin Falls on Sunday afternoon, if that is what we decide we want to do. I simply need to be back down far enough that I can get to PS monday morning.
So am I the only one who keeps trying to think of excuses to get off of work early tomorrow, and get a jump start on this trip?http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/hop.gif

[quote]Everybody is probably trying to think of excuses...
[quote]At this point I actually don't know if we will make it at all http://www.rxtx.com/4wdtrips/forum/emoticons/sad.gif . If we come we would most likely have to leave Sunday afternoon/evening, so it's not bad that the Plan takes the trip to the south-west end of the park.

Just for the records, Marcelo and I are still on.
I just spoke with Marcelo. He is leaving earlier than we planned. I will probably do that too. Friday night before a spring break week won't be very fun to drive...
Marcelo is packing already, and as he is very good on that he is changing the shocks absorbers too. I guess he has these shocks for year and never changed them until today.

Hey, guys have fun in Death Valley and try to give us a shout, as we will you. No repeater in D.V. that we know of, but we'll all be in on the same frequency so maybe we'll be in a spot where we can communicate.
We leave bright and early Saturday morning, to be in Jawbone Station at 8:00. We'll be with Robin,Al Walter, Joan & Dick Farrar, and quite a few others that some of you know from our tours. I think we have 11 vehicles. Mojave Expedition on Saturday, overnight in Ridgecrest, then a bonus trip to either Mesquite Canyon or the West Rands. Then Roger and I head up to Cerro Gordo hoping to beat the storm that could possibly bring snow to us Sunday night. I'll be up there the whole week should anyone want to stop by and say hello. I'll be living in luxury this year, I've got the Belshaw House all to myself, which means I'll have a real bathroom!
Next Friday, the 18th, Roger & Marty are going to drive up and spend the weekend at Cerro Gordo with me, then we'll all go home on Easter Sunday. We'll have lots of stories to tell when we get home!
I will have my laptop, but not sure I want to fiddle withconnecting it to the American Hotel phone so I can have internet connections like I did last year.If I do decide to hook it up, you mayget live reports about my adventure every day next week.
Good luck with the weather - at least you guys will probably have some warm weather this weekend. I'm expecting cold, and breezy at the very least, and I know I'm going to be freezing when I get to Cerro Gordo. I hear they still have patches of snow on the ground.

Wildflowers in Death Valley - April 2003
By Charlie Callagan -NPS-
A sporadic bloom of desert wildflowers is beginning in the park. The bloom is very spotty with most flowers being just a few inches high.
Visitors can expect wildflowers along the Scotty's Castle Road, the Mud Canyon Road, and the southern end of the Badwater Road.
You will have to stop the car occasionally and get out for a closer look to appreciate the variety of small desert annuals that are now beginning to bloom. Backcountry users are reporting some wildflowers in Gold Valley (4-WD required), along the Cottonwood Canyon Road (4-WD required), and along the southern end of the Greenwater Valley Road (2-WD high clearance).
If you are driving to the park from southern California you should enjoy the wildflower displays alongside state highways 14, 58 and 178 as they will probably be better than what you will find in Death Valley.
Be sure to stop in and visit the demonstration wildflower garden in the patio of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. It is in full bloom with many desert annuals labeled.
